Hello, just joined here my hubby is very close to being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Hoping to gain some valuable info about diet, he has 3 months before next blood test and hoping to be able to control with diet and avoid medication. Any help would be appreciated its all new (and a bit scary) at the moment. Thanks Jo

Hi Jo, welcome to the forum 🙂 I'd say that the best approach is to consider him already diagnosed and take the action that a newly-diagnosed person would take in order to take control of their blood sugar levels and manage them well 🙂 Hopefully, this will mean that, in three months time, he will have improved his situation so that he won't actually get diagnosed - if you see what I mean! 🙂

My advice would be to look into the GL Diet (Glycaemic Load) - [COLOR="
blue"]The GL Diet for Dummies[/COLOR] is a great introduction. This describes a method of choosing and combining foods so they will have a slow and steady impact on digestion and blood sugar levels. It's worth starting a food diary and recording (in grams) how much carbohydrate he is eating each day - this will give you a good idea of how much overall carbs are being consumed, and things that might be reduced or substituted in order to improve things. You might also like to get a copy of [COLOR="

Becker, to get a better understanding of diabetes so you know the potential pitfalls 🙂 Finally, regular exercise will really help to improve insulin sensitivity, which is a huge help in improving blood sugar levels - and general fitness and well-being of course!

A diet and exercise regime that is healthy for a person with diabetes is one that is healthy for everyone, so no reason why you can't join in! 🙂 Please let us know if you have any questions, and we will be happy to help 🙂

Good luck! 🙂

Hi jo and welcome to forum

Welcome to the forum, Jo. I'm new to this game, but after being on here for a couple of weeks, I feel like an expert.🙂 I've learned so much from everyone on here.

Hi Jo and welcome. My main advice would be to seriously cut down his carbs such as bread, rice, pasta and potatoes plus of course cakes, crisps and biscuits. We can underestimate just how much carb we eat (I know I did) and it's the carbs that convert to glucose that the body simply can't cope with in diabetics or those on the cusp of it. With the right effort and reading the links northerner has posted, I'm sure he'll get his levels down before the next test.

The important thing is keeping it down. Good luck!

Hi jo and welcome to the forum. It's a great place for help and advice.

Hi and welcome Jo - you have some great advise from the above so keep reading and experimenting and you will be fine.

Hiya - and be amazed at how full of crabs* a LOT of fruit is and also some veg. * that was a typo - however in this case they are live ones and therefore liable to BITE or at they very least give us a nasty nip - so it's appropriate and I'll not correct it!

Thank you all so much, we are overwhelmed with all your replies. I fully intend to go on this journey with my hubby and we will BOTH make life style changes. We are quite active we have a large allotment that we work on together and we have a dog so get lots of walks too. We are taking all your advice/comments on board and we get an advice pack from our doctors tomorrow so we are hoping that will be helpful too. I really do not understand GI and am confused as to what are good/bad veg & fruit to have, so I may be asking loads of questions, but we will do our best to stop him being diagnosed as diabetic and hopefully control this with diet and life style changes - thank you all again

Hi Northener, just to let you know I have just ordered both books that you recommended, thank you so much for your valued information - we are going to do this together 😉
