Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi,
Hope I’m using the right section. Just wanted to say hello to you all. I got diagnosed as having Type 2 on 11th Dec this year. I’m slowly getting my head around it. I suppose it hasn’t come as a massive surprise as the results of my last blood test a year ago showed I was nudging in the wrong direction and I did absolutely nothing about it. More fool me. It’s a wake up call and I’m just glad I know I have it rather than bumbling along in ignorance. I think my main issue has been the amount of alcohol I have been consuming. I have stopped alcohol completely and surprisingly I’m not missing it. I’m certain my cutting the alcohol out will bring my readings down at my next blood test in March of next year. I’ve never really had a sweet tooth so controlling that side of things is proving ok…. So far !. The NHS have been really good and are definitely ‘on it’ with helping me with information etc. They had to change my first tablets ( Metformin ) as the side effects were crippling. I’m now on Sukkarto, which are suiting me better. My initial HbA1c reading was 79. Apart from knowing that the Reading is too high I’m not sure if it’s massively high. My doctor didn’t indicate as such. All that said, I’m feeling very positive about the whole thing. I’ve lost some weight already , have cut out the alcohol out and that alongside a good diet , I’m determined to turn this around. Happy New Year to you all !

Welcome. Just to clarify, you’re still on metformin, you’re just on the slow release variety.

An HbA1C is high as the diagnostic threshold is 48mmol/mol but it is not as high as some people are when they are diagnosed and they have managed to reduce their level down to normal by a combination of diet or medication and diet and trying to get more exercise if they can.
Cutting down on alcohol will help but it depends on what you were drinking, wines and spirits with diet mixers are pretty low carb but beer, cider, liqueurs are much worse.
However it is not just sweet things which are the problem but all carbohydrates as they convert to glucose so food like potatoes, rice, pasta, crisps, pastry, breakfast cereals, tropical fruits are all high carb foods.
Many find a low carbohydrate approach successful and this link will point you in the right direction, https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/
Some find low calorie or a shakes and soups regime which can give an initial boost but whatever you choose has to be enjoyable otherwise it will not be sustainable for the long term.

I've previously known a naturist postie both whilst dressed and au naturel - but he always wore shorts whilst working!

Hi @Nudepostie and welccome to the forum - there is a wealth of experience on this forum and everyone is always keen to help - ask any questions you may have - there are no "Silly" questions on here so fire away, no matter how trivial they may seem - you will not be judged

I'm on sukkarto which is slow release metformin. When I was on two it bunged me up then as I increased a tablet a week til 4 I got diarrhea not the watery one and livable with. Slow release is supposed to bevless brutal than the original one. I'm now on two a day and recently the diarrhea stopped. I thought of sugar as the no no for diabetics but don't ignore carbs which turn into sugar. Big hitters are rice potatoes bread and pasta. However some people find it spikes their blood glucose others it is gentler. Look at the freshwell site which has loads of info. If you are keen on something and it's a bit high carb have a smaller portion with more veg. Alcohol is not a no no but probably better to not drink beer or cider. Work out what you can cut out replace or have a smaller portion according to your tastes and lifestyle. I'm retired and like going to local cafes. One sells frittata eggs are fine but if you rule out jacket potatoes pastry and bread there is little choice. I've always refused crisps. I therefore have a sandwich.
If you are buying packaged food look on the back under nutrition and it will give you the carbs.

Make sure you keep yourself hydrated as metformin works by releasing glucose from the liver into pee.

Read the threads and go to the learning zone. No question is stupid.
Good luck

Thanks very much for the information and advice.

That isn’t how metformin works at all. Metformin just makes you more sensitive to the insulin you already produce. It doesn’t release excess glucose into urine. There are other tablets that do that which have flozin in the name.

@Nudepostie I see @Lucyr has corrected me. I am getting two drugs I'm on slightly mixed up.
Staying hydrated is good anyway but the one that made me pee was a SGLT2 dapagloflozin. I was put on it in September and the metformin was reduced on basis HCP said there was an overlap in some functions. So I was only on metformin alone for 3 weeks before the SGLT2 was added.
The site linked to this forum has information on drugs as has the NHS site. I always read each leaflet before I start.
