Hi everyone, i have just had the call from the doctor and i have been given Metformin.. my first appointment is Wednesday to find out what i need to do. I havent been told what type i have and no advice on what to eat or drink.. could anyone help or point me in the right direction on the basic information on food and drink please.

Welcome.
If you have been prescribed Metformin you are likely to be Type 2.

Welcome to the forum 🙂 as grovesy said it seems you are more likely to be a type 2, as for food and drink stay clear of the obvious sugary stuff - fizzy juice, sweets etc, although diet drinks are allowed, foods to be careful with are carbohydrates so the likes of bread, pasta, rice, potatoes etc, make sure you keep up with water intake xx

Hi Mrs L, welcome. Do keep in touch, let us know how you get on, and never worry about any questions you have, no matter how silly they sound. We've all been there, and know how it is when you first sail the good ship diabetes.

Welcome Mrs L, As others have said it sounds like your Type 2 and your in the right place for any questions you may have.

Hi Welcome Mrs L. It is hard at first mainly because initially it comes as a shock and also because we're often left out on a limb.
Well you've found us, we know it from the inside and have some exceptionally knowledgeable people on here, The more questions you ask the more you will learn. So ask away ok.

Hi and welcome 🙂

Hello MrsL, welcome to the forum. It's a horrible shock isn't it, being diagnosed. I'm still not over it. 🙂

Drop bead & carbs, and I would replace them with Gin but I'm a lush and it may not be the best medical practice 😛😛😛

Hi Mrs L...no definitive answer what type diabetes you have yet...however... since you've been started on Metformin...would imagine likely to be type 2...that's the usual 'go to' start for the majority of type 2 's diagnoses...Wednesday's appointment should give you the definitive answer...food is very much an individual choice...the obvious ones to avoid are those rich in carbohydrates...the standards like white Bread...Rice...Potatoes...Pasta...you need to be aware what will raise (spike) your blood glucose (BG) above the recommended levels...some fruits...vegetables...processed/low fat foods...their carb/sugar content can be surprising...you will also find foods that others tolerate well...may not be suitable for you...very early days for you...it will be a lot to take in...often it is a matter of trail & error...many of us here test our blood sugar regularly...not generally recommended by our health care professionals for those controlling their diabetes with Metformin or just diet & exercise...it is very early days for you...perhaps the 'testing' issue is best left until you have a confirmed diagnosis...see what your GP or DSN (diabetic specialist nurse) has to say on that matter...then if in need of advice...come back to us...you will receive advice & support here...ask as many questions as you need to...I was diagnosed in July 2017...the best advice I had was to join this forum...the second was to test my blood glucose regularly...as said more about that later...as/when necessary...I believe in order to manage our diabetes...we need to understand what it is we have to manage...one essential source of information for me was a book...Type 2 Diabetes The First Year by Gretchen Becker...herself a diabetic...she takes you through her first year after diagnosis month by month...explains many of the questions we ask ourselves...how...why...what to do...easy to read...informative...keep us updated...be interested to hear your progress...good luck with your appointment on Wednesday.

Welcome to the forum. From personal experience this is the place to be for great advice and encouragement

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the forum, it is very confusing at the start, but with the help of this forum you will get there. And remember you will have good and bad days. Unfortunately with D a one size fits all approach does not work, what one person can tolerate another can't. Even cooking methods and portion size can affect the way bg spikes. I can eat a small amount of roast potatoes, but not mash. I can tolerate boiled rice in moderation but not fried. You will find what works for you.
