Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello,

First, what a great forum. So glad this is here as I'm clueless and ignorant about most of this. I couldn't find a relevant facebook group (found one for diabetic canines!). I was diagnosed type 2 on Friday at the hospital and given some Zicron tablets 40mg to bring my blood sugar down. It was 23 in the ambulance and 20 at hospital yesterday.
If this is better suited as a separate thread in the general section then please say and I'll post it there.
The past year I've been suffering from depression and after losing my job I've had alsorts going on. Last Tuesday I hd to fast since 9pm the night before for my blood test the next day. I walked to the hospital and was already pretty confused and I got worse at the hospital, really struggled to remember my DOB for the nurse. When I left the hospital I didn't know where I was. I spent the day walking as this frequently calms me down but on this day I eventually didn't know who I was, where I was or where home was. I was eventually found at 11pm and taken to hospital and still had not eaten a thing all day. The docs now suspect my high blood sugar could be the primary cause of my mental state.
When I left hospital yesterday I was told if I start sweating or clammy hands I need to go back straight away and not wait until monday (I'm due to see a specialist monday morning). I've had a really bad headache all day which I cannot shift. The info leaflet with my meds noted this is one of the symptoms of low blood sugar BUT it doesn't tell me what to do about it or if it's a problem. Which is why I'm here 🙂 I'm on my own this weekend and obviously want to avoid any confusing walkies again where I'm going to put myself at risk.
My diet has not been great in the past. I drink 3-4 cans of pepsi a day and usually have some sort of chocolate at least once a day too. Obviously that's stopped now so I'm guessing the change in diet also has it's effects on the body.
A headache I can deal with but I'm a bit anxious if it is a result of my bloods then I could make myself worse by doing nothing. Do you think there is something I should be doing in the next 36 hours? I don't really have any other information, I wasn't given a number to call for help and I'm probably getting worked up over nothing

Hi Matt, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear you've had a rough year :( What led up to you having the blood test? How long before going to hospital have you been feeling bad? Have you had other symptoms, like needing the loo a lot, being thirsty and hungry, and very tired? Did they give you a blood testing meter? The medication you have been given encourages your pancreas to produce more insulin, so there is a possibility that your levels might drop lower than you are accustomed to, resulting in the sweating, clammy symptoms. You should be safe to take some paracetamol for the headaches. Without knowing whether your blood glucose levels are high or low it's difficult to advise you on what, if any, action you should take. I'd suggest avoiding any high sugar items or other carbohydrates (bread, rice, potatoes, pasta - all of which can raise your levels) until you go to see the specialist. You could try a small biscuit if you get the symptoms and this may relieve then a little (this would help if your levels are on the low side, by elevating them a little, but if they are high then it shouldn't have much of an impact).

It sounds like they are unsure whether you are Type 1 or Type 2 - did they give you any indication?

I've been in regular contact with the GP for my depression. It's lead to voices in my head and an emotional rollercoaster. I'd noticed the constant thirst and going to toilet more and some blurry vision which the GP said were symptoms of diabetes so he sent me for a test. The doc in the hospital said he was pretty sure I am type 2 but the specialist would confirm that on Monday and I assume I'll get a meter and a lot of questions answered then.
If (big if) my diabetic symptoms are in some way causing my other problems it will be a huge sense of relief because I don't always agree with how the doctors have seen things the past year. Right now I'm just concerned that I could get worse overnight and decide to go for a walk again. I might even lock my front door and put the keys in an unusual place. I'm ok dealing with everything, I just want to make sure I'm not making things worse by doing nothing. Thanks for replying 🙂

High or fluctuating blood glucose levels will affect your moods, so may have played a part in how you have been feeling. It's not unusual for diabetes symptoms to be put down to other things going on in your life - I was under a lot of stress during the year prior to my diagnosis, drinking more, peeing more, feeling tired and in a low mood - the good news is that I started to feel much better once I had been diagnosed and getting appropriate treatment.

Do you feel sick at all, or just headachy? Hopefully, the medication will help a little with your levels so you won't get into the state you were in before.

Hi Matt from another Matt and welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear of your problems but hopefully once you see the specialist on Monday they and you can deal with the diabetes side of things and get it under control.

Hi and welcome to the forum Matt. Hopefully you get everything sorted out on Monday.

Hi Matt
Sounds like you've had a really difficult time, and hopefully getting the diabetes sorted will be the first step towards things getting better. In terms of keeping safe this weekend employ a better safe than sorry approach. If you feel unwell or confused at all go to the hospital. It's good you're seeing a consultant so soon too, so that sounds like progress. Blood sugar has a mighty impact on mood for me so it's likely that stabilising your blood sugar will help you stabilise your mood too. It's unlikely it's the root cause of the depression but the two conditions do interact with each other. Hope you had a good night last night, and are feeling OK this morning 🙂

Hi and welcome to the forum Matt. Hope your appointment goes well on Monday and you get the help and advice you need.

How did your night go Matt? Hope you managed to get some sleep and no dramas 🙂

Hi matt and welcome to the gorum. Hope your night went well

Thanks everyone. I slept until 11am which never happens. I feel much better this morning, far less second-guessing everything 🙂

Glad you are feeling a lot better today - its bewildering enough without anything else contributing!
