Hey anyone who is reading this, I'm new to this website and diabetes itself actually.
I'm Abi if you didn't guess from my name and I am a 16 year old (almost 17) who has recently been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. I joined this as advised by my support nurses and am just looking for people who are going through the same thing as I am. I look forward to hearing back from anyone who wants to chat or anything, I'm not sure exactly how this works but yeah 🙂

Hi abi, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis :( How did it come about? What insulin have they put you on, and how are you finding things?

Hello! Don't be sorry aha 🙂 But basically, I went to my GP with a problem about me drinking a lot more and peeing more and she put me on antibiotics saying that it was UTI and it would clear up soon (which wasn't the case) so I went back on Friday with a sample which got tested and showed up ketones and glucose and was rushed up the hospital which was very nerve wracking because I had no idea what was going on. A few glucose testing and blood tests later I was diagnosed with Type 1. I am on Nova rapid (I think it is) and a night injection which I can't remember off the top of my head 😛
I'm finding things alright but a bit odd as it's all new to me, I've managed to do all my injections independently but been feeling a bit down if I'm honest aha

I'm not surprised you're feeling a bit down abi, it's a big shock, plus you will still be recovering from how you were before your diagnosis. It does get easier though, but there is a lot to take in at the beginning! Great that you are managing with your injections 🙂 I'd recommend getting hold of a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents by Ragnar Hanas - it's a really excellent book that covers all aspects of dealing with Type 1, so well worth having 🙂 Please feel free to ask any questions you may have and we'll do our best to help!

Hi abi and welcome, my daughter was diagnosed type1 at 11 months old, she is 31 now there is loads of good advice here. Al

Hi Abi welcome to the forum

Loads of people have told me that it'll get easier with time aha, can't wait for that day to come! Thank you for your suggestion, I will look into it! 🙂

Welcome to the forum Abi. I won't be any help to you as I'm type 2 but all the other folks here will be of great support.

Hi Abi and welcome to the forum. 🙂

Hi Abbi welcome to the forum. There's lots of very experienced folks round here. Don't be afraid to ask for help. Some of these folks have been around for years and there are very few new questions they haven't heard before.

Hi Abi and welcome to the forum. There's a lot to get your head around, but you've made a good start posting on here🙂. Everyone is incredibly helpful and supportive.

Welcome to the forum......it does get easier

Welcome Abi.
It really does get easier, but there is a lot to take on at the start and it is a steep learning curve. The DSNs will help you step by step and do keep asking any questions as there are loads of people here ready to help.

Welcome to the forum Abi. This year I am in my 50yr of pins & Needles :D . Don't tell me I cant :D:D

Hi Abi! - why would we guess your age? even in Queen Victoria's younger days, one of her daughters (christened Abigail - plus the usual other string of Christian names Victorian children got LOL) was always shortened to 'Abbie' - and my own 16 yo granddaughter, actually named Abbie - but is AKA Abz when talking to or texting her. (Her mum is Shaz (Sharon) her Auntie (ie Sharon's older sis) is Coz (Corinne) and her own older sister is Loz (Lauren) I know not yet whether her little sister Ellie will become Elz - but her baby sis (Kassadie) is clearly Kass, so will most likely be Kaz 'whatever' !

But a rose, by any other name, would most definitely smell just as sweet - so what do names matter anyway!! LOL

16 isn't a bad age to be diagnosed, since you head at that age, is still very much in 'learning' mode - and you do have to learn a lot when you get diabetes. And it's perfectly and totally normal to think sometimes 'Why me?' - you'd be odd if you never thought that, as we all did, way back when. I joke about it now - cos it is the only thing you can do - you are still stuck with it one way or the other whether you dissolve into a puddle of tears or do the opposite - and sometimes Type 1 is OK and sometimes it isn't - in fact - just like Life itself.

The only thing to do in the finish - is just get on with it, and make IT fit in with what YOU want to do - whilst at the same time paying it the attention it needs, so that it doesn't bite you in the bum too often.

And you will find people telling you their auntie's cousin's brother's next-door neighbour had diabetes, and their kidneys failed/they went blind/their legs dropped off - so assure them that most certainly won't happen to you - and make blooming SURE you don't let it !!

Good luck!

Hi Abi and welcome from a Type 2 who's 15 months in. As you can see there's some T1's about to help with advice. *makes Abi a cup of tea*
