Hi, I would like advice as to which is better for me. I’m pre diabetic but borderline so trying to get my sugar levels down. I notice a lot of diets and programmes on weight loss seem to have jelly quite a lot. Now, I try to avoid artificial sweeteners, is it better to have less jelly with sugar or more jelly with artificial sweetners. I’m leaning towards normal jelly because of my dislike of sweetners.

You can make your own using gelatine or vegigel with pureed frozen berries.

@Debeaniebaby I buy gelatine and use that to beef up a single sachet of sugar free jelly, or I use sugar free squash or other flavourings. I mix in berries, sometimes I puree some of the fruit to add to the flavour, usually any enormous strawberries as found in the Lidl 4 berry mix, as they can go rather soggy being so large. I add in cream or yoghurt sometimes, when the jelly has cooled a bit, and then whip it up to a froth before adding the fruit, gently.

I used the sugar free jelly crystals for quite a while after diagnosis but I too have concerns about the amount of artificial sweetener in them and so I have stopped buying them although I still have a couple in the back of my cupboard for if I am really in need of a sweet fix, but my tastes are gradually changing and I need sweetness less and less. I was never a huge fan of jelly anyway, so it's no big deal to live without it.

I usually add sour berries like redcurrants, jostaberries, sour cherries to the jelly so it takes the sweetness down.

I think perhaps you misunderstand me. I could still very easily eat the sweetest of sweet things and enjoy it. I am a recovering sugar junky and could go back to that very easily, so I would never say anything was too sweet for me in the sense that I would not enjoy it, but changing my diet has helped me to find sweetness in things that are more sour and also enjoy savoury and bitterness as flavours more too. However I am concerned that sweeteners are not good for us either, so cutting out the sugar free jelly and Nature Valley protein bars etc. is my way of reducing my intake of sweeteners and highly processed foods. It has been a slow and steady progression away from these foods but they served a purpose in the early days after diagnosis when I had to quit the sugar. I suppose it's a bit like a smoker using vaping to quit smoking, I used those things and sugar free sweets like Sula etc to help wean me of sugar but I don't believe they are actually any better for me and I need to quit them too and in some respects, I am now thinking a bit of real sweetness from a sweet fruit (the odd dried fig, prune or apricot) may be a better option. This is only my option at the moment and it could change again, but I genuinely feel that we are putting too many chemicals into our bodies instead of real food and it worries me that we encourage people to use these sugar free jelly crystals and Nature Valley Protein bars etc., even though I used them myself, I think maybe they should be considered a short term fix like vaping rather than a lifelong change.

I’m happy to include a smallish amount of artificial sweeteners in my diet. Mostly sugar-free squash and other sugar-free drinks.

But I don’t have a lot of those - probably only a few glasses a day.

I’ve never noticed any negative effects over the past 30+ years
