Hi im type 2 for 12 years now and i am on Metformin tablets but now and again i get this intense itch in my feet and its driving me potty can any one tell me whats causing it ive tried different things that the nurse told me to do but none work could it be the medication im on?

Hello TIGGY. Sorry to read you're experiencing itchy feet ~ what a bummer! I have to say I didnt have itchy feet when I was on Metformin but before Christmas I developed Cellulitis in my left foot, ankle and lower leg and recently I am experiencing intense itching which is driving me insane too. Dont laugh but the only soother I could find was Lanacane (for ladies!) that comes in a red & yellow box. You might get some relief with this cream. Worth a try. Make sure you dry your feet thoroughly after bathing especially between your toes and keep them moisterised daily ~ I find Vaseline Intensive Care Locking in moisture cream is really very good. I'd suggest you see your Nursie again or alternatively consult your GP who may be able to diagnose the your itchy feet. Take care and good luck ~ I hope you get it sorted soon x

Hi Thank you, yes i have tried Lanacane also e45 itch relief but i just want to know what it is and whats causing it and if any one else was experiencing it, i am almost sure its the medication as i never had it before then thank you for your reply xx

There are plenty of folk here who may be able to help you TIGGY so do please keep checking this thread ~ someone will come along who may have the answer to your querie, take care. x

@TIGGY
HI TIGGY
Before my diagnosis I used to get an intense itch on the outside ofr my left foot, no skin damage or dryness just a little red. It was usually after a shower or when my feet wheer hot.
Saw my GP who looked at it and prescribed a cream which basically did nothing for it, I cannot remember name sorry. This had been going on for 2 or 3 years.
After I managed to get my BG under control I have not had any further problems with it at all, I definitely link it to raised BG levels.
I know that is not much help to you but it could point you in the correct direction
It really is annoying I know.

Hello Tiggy, welcome to the forum. Like @Vince_UK uk I was wondering if your itchy feet could be due to high BG (blood glucose) , do you test your own BG.
In the past I’ve had an itchy area on my thigh, which turned out to be because of high BG levels .
Also have you had a proper foot check recently, where they check if your able to feel a special filament being gently drawn over feet and lower legs, a tuning fork being pl@ced on certain areas of your foot and a Doppler test to check your circulation.

Hi thank you to all.... i think you are right about that it might be when my blood sugars are high Vince as my sugars have been risen this last few weeks as i have had a lot of stress (mother in law passing away) i really haven't tried that much with the food before i have eaten normally but in moderation as told by the hospital years ago, but as i get side affects like running to the loo with Metformin and such i have dropped the 2 evening meal ones off so that is a bit better now ,i have told the nurse about this and she said try to do it with food so i am,.. yes i have my feet checked, all ok i have been given a new monitor to use i have found out most foods rise it ! 😡being diabetic type 2 for that long you would think i would know but i don't i am still learning. thank you for your help i must try harder as i am fed up of it all now lol .😳😱🙂

I understand your frustrations @TIGGY but you cannot let them win.
The way I found, after advice from people on here, was to limit my carb intake as much as possible.
I aim for 80g/carbs per day and usually stay around that figure and the improvement seriously has been dramatic. I eat a lot of meat, fish, eggs, cheese and green veggies and I eat like the proverbial horse.
Just keep going and you will get there.

Many of us have found that by reducing our carbohydrate intake, esp the fast acting ones like potatoes esp mash, rice, pasta, bread esp white and things made with flour , oops I nearly forgot that many root veggies are quite high in carbs too that our control improves. I know this might sound awful @nd your now thinking , what the b%@@%? Hell can I eat , but I assure you we get to eat good tasty things.

Have a look through these threads, What did you eat yesterday .

I don’t know if you are aware so thought I’d mention it, their is a slow release Metformin that some people tolerate better.
