Hello
I was diagnosed with diabetes type 1 last week and it was a huge shock. I went into A&E to ask about an abscess under my arm and I was told it was caused by diabetes. They removed it by surgery but had to get my glucose levels down first which took ages. Now I'm at home recovering from the surgery and trying to manage life with diabetes. It's hard!! My body has swollen up and I've put on loads of weight around my back and my legs in particular - I think it's all fluid? My calves and ankles are swollen and it's hard even to stand up. I get shooting pains and general aching feeling all over. Is this normal?!

No this is not normal.
Please call your GP and insist you have an urgent conversation with him/her now. If no joy then ring 111 NOW not tomorrow or go to A&E

I know I had very swollen legs just after diagnosis but that was probably fluid retention due to the steroids I was on, although I was told that can also occur in newly diagnosed T1s on insulin.

Just finishing a course of antibiotics. Otherwise painkillers (inc. codeine) and insulin.
Please prioritise getting proper medical attention eg phone your GP or 111. Your symptoms need checking, and it's easier at 16:30 than 22:00 or midnight!
