Hello everyone.

Not been on here for a while, but I had a couple of questions to ask. Got a bit distracted, though -- I'd forgotten what a mine of information these message boards can be! Brilliant!

So my first question is related to illness; this week I got sinusitis after an unusually bad cough/cold. During the first few days of the illness, I pretended like it wasn't happening and did nothing about my rising blood glucose levels. After a while, I increased my basal rate and insulin-to-carb ratios, and my control got much better. But I'm wondering if all that sugary blood encouraged the secondary infection?

Any ideas peeps?

Yes it could have, and it can cause infections to live out for longer too. Best to get right on top of those numbers as soon as you can, bacteria likes the sugar !. (plenty of fluids and rest too 😉)

I certainyl don't think high sugars help recovery, but I've also got a bad cough/cold that I can't get rid of, and find that whenever I get ill it takes me twice as long as hubby to get rid of it, and I know when I'm ill to tackle my rising sugars, in fact they are usually the first indication I'm about to be ill... sometimes even double bolus doesn't seem to do anything for me though...

Hope you feel better soon

Xx

As a type 2 I am affected slightly differently as some over the counter remedies don't interact well with my diabetes meds and I have to ask.

My suggestions would be drink plenty of warm sugar free or no added sugar drinks, I find warm orange squash and warm black current (reduced sugar varieties) very helpful. A hot shower helps open up the airways but don't stay in there too long.

May pay to ask pharmacist or doctor for advice as to what you can have to help relive the symptoms.

Hope you feel better soon
