Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
So basically I'm a bit confused. What's the deal when it comes to ice cream? Do I seek out a 'diabetic ice cream' or do I go for a small amount of standard vanilla ice cream or am I worrying too much?

I enjoy my sweet treats now and then, so am learning about what the best things are to go for. I'm also confused about the best thing to go for if I want a little dessert when eating out.

A newbie that needs help here

Definitely wouldn't bother with diabetic anything. As type 1, you can theoretically count the carbs and eat anything, provided you inject the correct mount of insulin to cover it. However if you want lower carb options, profiteroles are good as they are filled with cream and creme brûlée is often not too bad.

Ok, that's great 🙂 thank you steph. Iv heard about avoiding diabetic foods but sometimes I worry and think would they be a better option.

Most foods with the diabetic label are not better for anyone, including people with diabetes, as they have higher carohydrate content, and often have ingredient which have laxative effects if eaten in quantity.
As you have type 1 diabetes, you can adjust your insulin dose to the carbohydrate content of waht you eat. So, any type of ice cream is OK. Remember to include any cone, syrup, fruit etc.

When on holiday - if you restrict your visit to the ice cream van or parlour to 'at the end of my walk' or 'after my swim' etc - you may not need to bolus. However - I am quite happy to eat the ice-cream and the Cadbury's flake, and just eat as much of the cone (boring) as I need to in order to access the ice cream - and donate the remainder to the ever present flock of seagulls!
