Coeliac disease. I decided to go and see my GP and ask if the biopsy results are back and he told me the biopsy showed that I do have Coeliac D with inflamation. I really thought my GP would say it was negative, but no. Anyway,on a positive note, I now at least have a diagnosis and I should get an appointment to see a mangement Coeliac nurse at the clinic, I hope sooner rather than later, as the center has shown to be a little lax.
I'm not sure about what to do now as my GP said I would get gluten free products on perscription, but my GP didn't start me off on any of these products, so unsure whether to buy some myself or just wait, but he did say the list can be as long as a Tesco shopping list!
So I will try to find out more about the disease and be in control of the changes that will happen.

With best wishes

Hi Sheena, I'm sorry to hear that you have something else to contend with :( It is good though that you now have a firm diagnosis so that you can hopefully alleviate the symptoms and control things. I reviewed a very good introduction to Coeliac Disease here:

http://www.diabetessupport.co.uk/boards/showthread.php?t=15920

You may find it useful as an introduction.

Hope you get your appointment soon so that you can find out exactly what you need to do. I believe that a lot of our members have Coeliac also, so hopefully they will be able to share their experiences and advice with you. Take care.

So sorry you have this to contend with too.

Hopefully knowing what you are dealing with and how to go about it will help in making you feel so much better. Hopefully you will get all the support and advice from your surgery soon.

Best wishes x 🙂

Hi Sheena,

Sorry to hear this.:(From what I have read on the CWD list you will notice a big change once you start eating GF foods - more energy and your digestive problems should all but disappear. I think some GP's can be quite strict with what they will prescribe but it depends how good yours is. They do a big range in Sainsburys - even frozen foods which might help. I have also read that once you go GF it does mean that you might become more sensitive to gluten than before - not sure why but would think your body heals itself so once gluten is eaten again it triggers worse reactions. I am sure you will learn all this once you see a dietecian.🙂Bev

Something else to deal with eh? I am sorry to hear this. I suppose though the good thing is that at least you now know what you are dealing with and can make choices that should bring you better health. I expect it will be a lot to take in at first. I agree about the "Free From" range in Sainsbury's. I had a friend here a while back who has to avoid dairy and gluten and I bought her some bakewell tarts from that range! Lol - I get my priorities right - cake everytime! All the best anyway.xxx🙂

Thanks flutterby, yes cake everytime, definitley, I will have a look in Morrisons tomorrow as its just a few minutes away from my house🙂 with best wishes

Thanks bev, Iknow it may be hard, but at least I actually know what it is now and hopefully I will start to feel better soon. With best wishes

A big thank you to Hanmillmun. Life throws discomfort and pain sometimes and going GF I should reap the benefits. With best wishes

Thank you for that information Northerner, is was good of you to post it. Best wishes

I'm sorry to hear of your diagnosis Sheena. But at least you now know what you are dealing with and that you will start to feel better once you know what you can and can't eat. You have the right attitude so I'm pretty sure you'll soon get top side of it and be fine. Sending you hugs. XXXX

Hi Sheena Big hugs that you've now got this to deal with - it's not fair that you've got yet another illness. However I'm really glad that after all this time of you feeling unwell that you now know what is wrong and that something can be done about it. I can't believe that it took them so long to give you a diagnosis. I know that this is going to be a big change in your life but I really hope that now you know what you've got to deal with that you will start to feel really well again xxx

Hi Sheena. That's a real shame.:(

Your approach to it fantastic and you'll probably end up teaching your GP about it, as we know is often the case.

I presume it's on the list of 'prone to' conditions that we have to face.

Rob

Sorry about the diagnosis Sheila, but like others have said at least you know why you felt so unwell. I have quite a few friends with Coeliac disease - all of whom felt awful before diagnosis and all of whom now feel so much better with proper advice and support. Many places now label their meals and food for coeliacs so at least people recognise just how much this affects so many. Wishing you well for the future. Katiex

Coeliac UK is a good place to seek advice - see http://www.coeliac.org.uk/

They can advise on practicalities of prescriptions for gluten free products, getting referral to dietician etc. In the meantime, there is an increasing range of gluten free items on sale in supermarkets, especiallly Sainsburys Free From range, but also eg Mrs Crimbles coconut macaroons, which I always buy when meeting my sister, as she eats gluten free items, and I like them! 🙂

Thank you Blithespirit, Amanda AJ, Katieb,Robster65 and Copepod for your lovely words it means such alot X

I went shopping at Morrisons and bought a 400grm Warburtons GF loaf at?2,00😱 some Kallo organic rice cakesthins with a thin coating of belgian chocolate on top. Nairn's cheese Oatcakes, nuts and more fruit. I spoke to biopsy Dr's secretary this morning and she said there is a Coeliac department at the hospital with dieticains, I will be refered, but if there is a waitning list, then I dxont know when I will see someone? She said any prescripstions will come from my GP ( I will drop him a line to ask for basic need foods, flour ( which I also bought today at ?1.70) bread and pasta. I looked at a packet of GF Cereal, but at over ?3.00 I decided aginst it.
Mrs Crimmbles sounds very quaint, but coconut, no I dislike it with a passion
:( lol
I had a chicken, lettuce and mustard mayo sandwich, at lunchtime, which was nice and 2 Kallo thins, which were also nice.
Some of the 'free from' foods were quite pricey in Morrisons and a bit of an eye opener!!! but I will shop around.
On Sunday I am making chicken casserole and was going to make dumplings, has anyone make GF dumplings and they have tasted good, as its for my daughter as well. We always have a 'Sunday pud' of some sort, so I might try one of the receipes on the back of the flour packet as I bought a brand new hand mixer last week from Robert Dyas and haven't used it yet.
Once again, thank you so much for your support and advice. I have been having upper adominal pain all day today and nausea, both are routine with me, so not sure whats happening there, but hopefully it will fade away with the new GF diet.
With my very best wishes X

Congrats at your diagnosis

Most coeliacs are never diagnosed😱

Hope that gluten free living does as much for you as I

The price of 'free from' processed foods is crazy. Even though some can be had 'for free' I shudder at the contents listed on the reverse of the pack.

Most unprocessed foods that nature produces are gluten free ( meat, fish, poultry, eggs, fruit, veg etc ) - so, control freak like - I cook from scratch & bring my own food to work ( many arnt so lucky as to be able to make time for this ).

I find http://coeliac.ie/webboards/index.php?sid=9aee07de3628818f0b320a2624ddb698 a useful link.

Perhaps Coeliac.co.uk have similar ?

Hope you find your coeliac nurse helpful

P.S. For the time being be very careful of GF oats. Most stuff is either GF or not. BUT, even GF oats can cause problems with some coeliacs
