Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi, 3 months ago I was advised my HbA1c was 49 & I had type 2 diabetes. Like many I was shocked, horrified and ashamed ( of my eating habits, inactive lifestyle etc). Luckily for me I came upon this forum and took advice to buy a bg meter and test at the prerequisite intervals. I cut out all junk food, alcohol & ate lower carb, normal fat. Nothing with added sugar. Went on daily brisk walks come rain or shine (mostly rain). Weight loss stands at 2 stone 9 & ongoing. GP phoned today with 3 month update on HbA1c...so low it's not on the scale....26. Obviously I'm thrilled at the massive reduction. Was told to eat more but I'm not doing without or hungry. It's an ongoing way of life for me. Now I need you to tell me what's a healthy range please and what to do differently? I'm so pleased with this result. GP also v pleased & suggested a 6 month review. Thank you all so much for helping me!

Wow! In just 3 months that is an outstanding achievement, which reflects the hard work that you have put in. Well done you!

If your weight is nearing normal BMI, you can afford to eat more and with an HbA1c as low as 26, you can either increase your carbs a little.... but keep an eye on levels with your BG meter.... or increase fat intake a little more. Maybe have cream in your morning coffee as I do which is a daily luxury I relish. Depending on how much or little you enjoy an alcoholic drink, treating yourself to a couple of units a week or a bit more even.... not encouraging you to drink by any means, but just within safe limits if it is something you used to enjoy... so might be something you would like to do again. I choose low carb drinks like spirits with low cal mixers or a glass of wine, so it doesn't effect my BG levels and then the only impact is the empty calories which I burn off with exercise anyway.
I think it is nice that you have a little leeway to extend your diet to include a few treats at this time of year, but up to you whether you want to take advantage of that opportunity or not. The important thing is that you have your BG meter and you can use it to ensure that you don't slide back to old ways without realising it.

Good luck and looks like you have at least something to celebrate this Christmas! Hope your family are suitably proud of you. Outstanding effort!

Thank you Barbara, you have continually been helpful🙂 Still overweight so need to keep at it but this news has really made me happy. No alcohol continues in the meantime until I get to maintainenance levels with Haemochromatosis. I think I'll try adding in small amounts of carbs as I'm probably too low now. Got meter, can test!

Amazing job @Christy! And in such a short time...you must be well chuffed. Keep testing and you'll be fine. 🙂

Well done @Christy. 🙂 Those are great results and all down to your determination and hard work!

Well done @Christy It's your type of stories that really inspire me to keep going!

Excellent!

Thanks everyone for your kind messages. I would have been clueless without your knowledge & posts on this forum. It made all the difference!

What an encouraging story @Christy - well done for acting so decisively and diligently!

It will be interesting to see what you choose to reintroduce, and where it settles 🙂

Just ‘eat to your meter’ and experiment with a gradual reintroduction of a few carbs - which you might find makes thigns a bit easier and more flexible if you are grabbing food on the go?
