Well I've had a bit of a day of it today, had to eat a shed load of carb just to keep my blood sugar above the drain, and I mean a shed load, culminating in a starbucks chocolate and cherry muffin, and it's just gone up to 6.6 finally. All day I've been peaking at 4.5 and then going back down despite eating toast, biscuits, jelly babies, chocolate truffles etc, I don't quite know how I stuffed that there muffin in I was starting to feel quite sick. I suspect it can't all be because I missed lunch yesterday, since I've been having a few slides in blood sugar at around 5ish over the last few weeks. I wasn't sure if it was my lunchtime ratio or the evil Lantus but given that since yesterday from around three I've been battling to keep the blood sugar above four it's most probably the Lantus. I was hoping to avoid Lantus fiddling till after the festivities but I think he needs a dial down tomorrow. Bah, hate drain days especially when I haven't had any sleep :(

Evil Lantus? Lantus has made a drastic improvement to my son and myself when we started using it in June this year.

Boo! :( Sounds like you are having the same srt of fun as I had with the lantus a couple of years ago. I hope the adjustment puts things straight, it does sound like a basal problem.

It doesn't suit everyone :(

I've been on lantus for quite a while now and thought I was doing ok but now I'm wondering if that's the cause of some of my unexplained yoyo results. I am pretty sure it's my basal but hesitate to fiddle with it. New year resolution to sort it out properly. I hope you have a well balanced Christmas. I have read about your fine tuning so I'm sure you will.

I have quite a bit of trouble with it sadly, it has a very definite peak in me, and it seems to build up approximately every six to eight weeks to hypo gate, then I have to dial it down and the whole cycle begins again. I'm very sensitive to insulin so apparently that's part of the problem. I am especially sensitive to insulin at night and so they're reluctant to give me background that requires two injections. That starbucks muffin seems to have mopped it up though.

Hobie I don't qualify for a pump, my control is too good on MDI, and here you have to be at death's door before they'll part with one unless you're under 16.

We have had members here in the past who have had very clear problems with sensitivity being given a pump, so it's not entirely impossible. Although, the likelihood of it happening are very much down to the postcode lottery :(

It was made very clear, here it's a very high HBA1c or complex complications. I could move to Manchester but that would be a last resort because it's a fair clog away, wouldn't have been bad when I worked there but very tricky now. Plus I'd like to see if it settles, thought I'd cracked it last time, so hopefully 2-4 units dial down will do it, otherwise I'm eating chocolate all day on Christmas Day :D

Keep at them Kooky ! I was the second person in my area to get one. You might have to cry in the right persons ear 🙄

You do qualify for a pump, read the NICE guidelines. Your quality of life is a major issue here as is your safety.
Say you want a pump and if the answer is no then ask for the reasons in writing. Address all issues then if the answer is no then contact INPUT.

Two jabs - ie Levemir - is worth a try though!!!

I used to take 14u in a morning and 4u at approx. 9pm at night. That 4u was enough to top up the dwindling daytime Levemir. You might find just one jab of it in a morning is enough, because at such low doses 'per kilo' you can't really tell from the graph, how long it WILL last - but usually between 12 and 18 hours.

I mean I AM sensitive to insulin - I'm still only on about 9u TDD basal on the pump ! meaning really, that no basal insulin currently on the market could really respond to my body's basal needs, and if your basal ain't about right, anything you do with fast-acting insulin doesn't only deal with the carbs, it has to paper over the cracks too - which it isn't designed to !

I'm going to keep at them and I'll ask them to write down why I'm not eligible. Plus I think I'll ask for a different basal in the meantime and see if I have more luck.

That magic starbucks muffin was sadly temporary I took one unit of insulin with my dinner and was 4.9 again within the hour, and two hours after breakfast I'm lower than when I started. Lantus dialled down and biscuits on standby. My godson thinks it might be Patty Pancreas' Christmas present so I can eat mince pies, maybe I'll choose to believe that 🙂

Perhaps think about changing your carb ratio as well.

Sorry to hear you're having a tough time of it Kookycat. 😱 I guess you're still on honeymoon, as well as not getting on with Lantus. I used to have a week every few months where I couldn't lower my rapid any further - imagine...1 unit of Apidra to cover 8 CPs! Those days are long gone now tho!

As for a pump, I'm sure you can be very persuasive - just blind them with your superior intelligence (and bribe them with some muffins!). Good luck.🙂

Great minds eh, I've just switched to a temporary 1:25 throughout, might have to change evening to 1:30 again for a bit until the Lantus calms itself down.

You already talk like a pumper, so they have to let you have one!🙂

Honeymoon, still can't believe they chose that word 🙂. Clearly Patty was on it yesterday, cheeks puffed with exertion and everything. She does seem a little less enthusiastic today though so that's nice. I am suspiciously hungry though, I could quite cheerfully have eaten everything in M&S earlier, even the prawns looked attractive and I'm deathly allergic to those 😱
