Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I am new to the forum and wish all well in their pursuit to defeat diabetes. I am type2 since 2007 or earlier and aged 80. I am Indian Brahmin vegetarian. I eat 40 grams of whole rolled oats in skimmed milk with Splenda and cinnamon and one pear fruit. Today I had 60grams of oats. I feel hungry after that until I eat my lunch. Afternoon is not that difficult. I eat two chapattis with some vegetable or lentils.
I will appreciate any help with regard to breakfast or eating in general.
Thanks for any advice and help.

Welcome to the site..........I personally just eat what I like as I am type 1, but there are many type 2s, some vegetarian, even vegan who will be able to share their experiences.........🙂

Hi and welcome to the forums 🙂

I'm not a vegetarian, so I can't help with specifics.

I had read that Low Glycemic Index foods would tend to keep some of the hunger feelings away an the basis that hunger pangs can be caused by blood glucose spiking and subsequently dropping fast.

There are a couple of books linked on the Useful Links page. But a general search for GI / Glycemic Index can turn up a lot of useful information too.

I've personally been adding a snack of nuts between meals and grazing on salad to help calm my hunger pangs (I also get them mostly just before lunch).

Hi krishen. Welcome 🙂

My only thoughts are to ask if you could increase your vegetable intake further to fill you up.

And I suspect you may be our most senior member, or very near it, so you deserve a pat on the back for that ! :D

Hi! I am a vegetarian but am type 1 so I'm not sure how helpful this will be. I used to have porridge with skimmed milk for breakfast but found that it made my sugar levels spike quickly and then I would get hungry again about 1 -2 hours later because it just didn't last. To make food last longer, try to introduce more fibre, protein and fat. I find adding lots of nuts to a homemade museli or natural yogurt and berries helped. The best thing I have found is seeded wholemeal toast, with tomatoes, mushrooms and a poached egg, then I don't get hungry until lunchtime 🙂 Snacking on nuts or drinking a hot drink like tea helps to prevent hunger too.

Hi Krishen. I suspect that with what I presume is an Indian diet it's going to be quite hard. Rice is good for spiking your BG levels as are chapattis, puris nan bread etc. You could look at eating wholemeal chapattis and maybe just have one instead of 2 for instance. Have you thought of nibbling carrot sticks when you feel hungry. I tend to nibble a couple of walnuts, in between meals. Dilute lemon juice is very good for staving off hunger. Having reached to age of 80 how bothered are you by the complications of diabetes? Are you on medication yet?

Welcome to the forums. I used to work with an Indian Brahmin.

I would go along with Mark T in that you should have a look at what foods are low GI, as they will give you a slow release of energy.

How do you feel about nuts and seeds - you could roast some nuts with cayenne it might help stave of hunger. Just not too many nuts though as they can be quite calorific.

I can only add that it's also worth considering fluid intake, as sometimes drinking water or fruit tea, for example, can fill you up without affecting blood sugar levels much.
