I was diagnosed T2 just after Christmas but was prediabetic for a year. I haven't been taking it seriously even though I know I should. I have a lot of weight to lose which is having a massive effect on my mobility. This morning I decided to use the blood glucose monitor I bought 3 months ago and was shocked to get a reading of 18.4 mmol/l after a 14 hour fast. As you can imagine it has motivated to finally get my act together and I'm hoping to get tips and recipes from diabetes uk and this forum.

Great to have you onboard @Laneypop Welcome

Hi @Laneypop and welcome from me also 🙂 As you'll see from many threads here, most of us eat a low carb diet, and some of us (me included) very low carb. Not only does this lower blood sugar but it also helps with weight loss. Many of us have eschewed spuds, rice, pasta and bread, and add to meals through lots of other vegetables, especially green leafy ones.

Are you on any medication or have you been advised to address your T2 through diet alone?

Hi
Thanks for your reply.
I was put on 500mg metformin at the end of December when I was diagnosed but this was increased to 1000mg at my review last week. My problem is willpower and finding meals that are quick and simple as I hate to cook and also have trouble standing for long periods. I know what I should eat (I lost 2 stone in 2 months on keto in 2019 but lockdown scuppered that and I've put it back on with extra) but I struggle to know how to make it interesting. I'm leaning towards simple meals of just meat and green veg for now, but not sure whether that will be boring. I think I'll start working towards very low carb like you and hopefully will get results.

Sorry to hear how high your levels have risen @Laneypop :(

We have a few forum members who manage their blood glucose, and their weight, with a reduced carbohydrate approach, but not necessarily full ketogenic. Did you find keto hard to stick to?

Sometimes when people are looking for a bit of a reset, it can be really helpful to keep a food diary for a week or two. Being brutally honest and noting down everything you eat and drink. Keeping track of a reasonable estimate of the amount of total carbohydrate in the meals and snacks can give you an idea of likely candidates for swaps, tweaks and portion control.

Sometimes it’s best to make changes to your menu gradually - partly because they need to be sustainable long term, but also because very rapid and sudden changes to blood glucose levels are harder on the fine blood vessels, and changing things more gently will give your body time to adapt.

We also have quite a few members who have successfully managed to lose weight who can offer you their hints, tips and experiences

Good to have you with us 🙂
