Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hello, I'm 25 and was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes on Thursday. Still feeling overwhelmed... Supposed to be going out after work tomorrow but feeling pretty nervous about it (probably won't be drinking now ).

Hoping it will get better!
 
Hi @katenewton24 and welcome. Everyone feels overwhelmed and confused at the start but you soon get your head around things. Some of our friendly and knowledgeable T1s will be along shortly

It will take time to get things settled, and to adjust your insulin doses to suit your needs.
I too am surprised that you are already back at work and hope that this does not involve driving to/from or as part of your work. You will be able to drive but need to have levels sorted beforehand.

What insulins are you on. You will normally be put on two different ones:
basal - background to deal with the glucose released from your liver to keep you ticking over)
bolus - quick acting to deal with the glucose from the carbohydrates in your meals.

it is a lot to take in at the start but , like learning to drive, it soon becomes automatic.

I won’t bombard you with more info yet. Just come back with any questions that you have.

I work from home normally and have taken some time off this week but will be getting the train tomorrow.

I am on Levemir for my basal insulin and NovoRapid for my bolus insulin.

Regarding exercise, what is the best way to start re-introducing this?

Cautiously 🙂

It's something you should talk over with your healthcare team whenever you next have contact. They'll certainly be keen for you to resume whatever exercise you prefer and will want to help you do it safely.

(The issue is that (usually) exercise causes blood glucose to fall so you need to be aware of that. With some planning (eating more beforehand or reducing insulin for the meal beforehand) things can be simpler. Sometimes reducing basal insulin in the morning before exercise is also useful. And if you do lots of exercise, reducing basal insulin for the night after the exercise is useful. But some (higher intensity) exercise can increase blood glucose. But it's all a bit variable from person to person, and (like many things) there's a lot of trial and error.)

For all of us exercise has an impact on our glucose levels. This will take a bit of time to work out, and I remember when first diagnosed I was surprised at the impact of simply walking to work. You will need to be patient, as things will be a bit wobbly at the start, hence the idea of taking some time off so that you can focus on this.

Your DSN will work with you to gradually alter your dose. You will also get to the point where you change your dose for meals depending on the amount of carbs you eat. A good thing to do is to start working out how many carbs you are eating at each meal. The information is given in different formats on different foods, but it is an essential tool for each of us to enable to adjust our doses.

when you start to do exercise monitor your levels closely and errr on the side of caution. Have a hypo treatment readily available so that you can treat quickly if you feel symptoms.

Trial and error for sure - I'm also 25, also on Novorapid & Levemir, and also diagnosed T1D very recently (about a month ago!) so very much in the same boat.

The general rule of thumb I've been told is aerobic exercise like running will lower your BG, whereas exercise like lifting weights could raise it..that said I've proven both of those things can also go very much the opposite way..! I can't wait to get my fitness levels back up again but am taking it slow for now.

It'll also be different depending on time of day, length of time since last meal and, tbh, which way the wind is blowing sometimes 🙂 Try it out and see what works for you, and always have snacks on hand!

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. It is perfectly normal to feel overwhelmed and shocked by your diagnosis. But take heart... things WILL get better. You are an an extremely steep learning curve right now, and everything will feel strange and unknown. But soon enough, it will all become second nature as you get to know your diabetes.

Quite a few forum members over the years have found either of these books really helpful as a thorough grounding in T1.

Type 1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents and Young People by Ragnar Hanas. Don't be misled by the title - this book is relevant to people of all ages!

Think Like a Pancreas’ by Gary Scheiner - A practical guide to managing diabetes with insulin

Good luck, and keep asking questions here. There are lots of friendly, experienced members whose brains you can pick about all manner of queries and quandaries 🙂
