Hi @Juststephen23 and welcome to the forum. Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you came to be diagnosed. It helps enormously with the replies people can give to any questions you may have. Did you have an HbA1c test? If so do you know the number? It is a great place to start and a way of judging how far you have to travel. Are you on meds?

Hi I had a blood test and it come back saying I had type 2 diebeats I have metformin for breakfast and one for lunch and I spoke to nuse about we’re I go from heat

Hi @Juststephen23 do you know the number from your HbA1c? It should be a number above 48 for a diagnosis. As you'll see in my signature mine was in the 70s and then a week later in the 60s. If you don't know the number ask the next time you talk to your GP.

I am guessing diagnosis came as a shock. It does to most people including me. Do you need to loose weight? How much exercise do you do? The best way to try and control your blood sugar is to limit your carb intake. If you read around on the forum there are lots of useful tricks and tips.

Hi I found out it was in my notes mine is 69 . And she wats me to get down to 58. And I going do more walks and need lose the weight and it was a shock and I need to no what the best food

Hi 69 is not too bad. There are many people on here who have started in 3 figures. An HbA1c measures the amount of glucose attached to your blood cells and as they circulate for around 3 months it is a three month average.

Lots of T2s use finger prick tests with a blood glucose monitor. By monitoring when you wake (an approximation to a fasting level), just before meals and two hours after meals you can monitor how various things you eat change your BG reading. Generally anything with carbs is bad for BG. Here I don't just mean sugar but things like bread, pasta, rice, potatoes etc. So lots of us try and control BG but following a low carb diet. For example, last night a cooked a Malaysian Curry and instead of curry and rice I had a bowl of curry. Very tasty, very filling and low in carbs. Tomorrow I'm cooking a chilli and it will again be a bowl of chilli rather than chilly and rice. Can you give us an idea of the types of food you usually eat? Then we can make some suggestions for things you might want to avoid and for possible substitutions

Hi @Juststephen23 and welcome to the forum.
Us Type 2 diabetics have problems when we eat too many carbohydrates (not just sugars).
For some strange reason most GPs don't advise us to eat fewer carbs or to test the Blood Glucose reaction that we get to the meals we eat.

I think that's crazy. So my advice is to do what I did.:
A). Cut down on starchy foods ( as well as sweet ones).
B). Get a Blood Glucose meter and test before and 2hrs after every meal. Aim for no more than a 2.0 mmol increase and try to keep the maximum reading down to 8.0 mmol if possible.
C). Don't fear fat! Fat doesn't make you fat - carbs do. Farmers feed their animals carbs to fatten them up.
D). If you eat Low carb High(er) traditional Fat then your Blood Glucose will reduce and you will probably find you also lose weight without feeling starving (even if you do no more exercise than before).
|E). Many T2D's with highish Blood Pressure find that when eating LCHF their BP reduces so that they need to come off their BP medication.

an HbA1C of 69 isn't too bad, many have got T2D into remission in a few months of LCHF when staring from an Hba1C much higher some from over 100 !

If you think about the carbs, bacon is fine. High fat and high protein but no carbs. A bacon sandwich on the other hand is bad because of the bread. Pizza is not good because of the carbs in the base. Chips are also bad. You can try making them with lower carb veg like celeriac instead.

I'm currently working my way through a great book - Amazing Malaysian by Norman Musa. Love his curries! If you try any of his recipes note that some of them use potatoes. I cook them and simply omit the potatoes. Also don't cook anything that uses sweet or Indonesian soy sauce. I made that mistaken and BG went haywire for 24 hours - it is full of sugar!

We have chilli regularly. My wife has hers with rice, I have mine with riced cauliflower which is only 4g carb per 100g.
I love the recipe from Thomasina Miers book "Mexican Food Made Simple"

@ianf0ster too much information 🙂
Only too much if the person can't take it emotionally.
The sooner a T2D person hears that they have been lied to by EatWell , 5 A Day and probably their GPs. Then the sooner they can start to believe the truth and take control of their condition.

I think @adrian1der may have been referring to your typo/autocorrect!

Hello @Juststephen23 and welcome to the forum.
You have already been given lots of information on what to eat, and I hope this has given you some useful ideas.

It can take a while to work out what is best for you to eat.
Instead of bacon I use turkey rashers, that look very similar and are quite tasty.

There is no particularly good place to shop, but maybe when your shopping try to buy more things from the vegetable sections and less from the bakery.
If you want to read a bit more about how to go about eating well to lower your blood sugars and maybe loose some weight as well then looking at Maggie Davey's letter which shows how this lady went about it, may help. here is a link.

Hi @Juststephen23 I started with diagnosis back in August, I have since been on a low carb high fat diet and now lost 1.5 stone. So no potatoes, rice, pasta, sugary things, high carb bread etc
I do eat bacon, eggs, double cream etc - they make me feel full and so I don’t need to eat as much. I only discovered this way of eating by reading advice on this forum and it has really worked. I use an app to count carbs and calories. I also reduced HbA1c to a pre diabetes level.

Ah yes, the things nurses tell diabetics do give us a good laugh even in these dark and dismal days.
What a lot of people notice is that they now shop around the outside aisles of the supermarket - starting with the veges area, stocking up on salad and low carb veges for as long as they will stay fresh - you will learn the amount you use each week quite sook I would think.
Then meat and fish, and cheese, eggs are there too, and I get Greek yoghurt and really thick cream for my coffee and then finally the freezer aisle, with frozen seafood, fish and berries and I can get a low carb stirfry, and mixtures of veges. I get a really nice ground coffee if needed, and that's about it. These days I usually shop in Lidl, as they usually have what I want.
I eat twice a day, two proper meals, and by eating low carb with natural fat I have lost quite a lot of weight and am classed as in remission with normal blood glucose levels.
