Type 2
Hello everyone. My names Belinda, I live in Scarborough and am 74 years old. I was recently diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes but really don't know much about it. It was only picked up after a blood test for other problems. I am having phone consultations with the nurse at my surgery, tried losing weight and took Sitagliptin which had no effect. Now starting on Metformin. Have lots of hobbies and try to keep busy.

Hi Belinda, and welcome to the forum 🙂

I think a few of us Type 2s have been picked up whilst other problems were investigated. I'm also on Metformin and fortunately it agrees with me. Some people report gastric problems but I was fine after the first couple of weeks.

Any specific questions, please fire away as there will always be some knowledgeable person who can help. I've learned such a lot about this condition since I joined the forum. Like you, I didn't know much about it but I am getting there slowly.

If you are trying to diet, low carb seems to be the way to go. There is a great place on the forum on Food & Carbs, and there are some fab recipes and meal ideas.

Why were you put on Sitagliptin first as that is not the usal first line of treatment?

HI Vonny. Good to "meet" you. I've actually managed to lose well over a stone but it didn't seem to make any difference to my blood-sugar. Like you I seem to be lucky with the Metformin. Felt sick for a few days but OK now. Having said that, I'm on the lowest dose at the moment. I really haven't got a clue about navigating round this site -not very techy-minded and don't even know how to thank the mods for welcoming me. Hope they'll understand. Thanks for your message. Take care, Belinda.

Well done on the excellent weight loss Belinda!

Mods will certainly understand 🙂 They are lovely and supportive and keep us secure from trolls and spammers I'm sure. It's quite simple getting around the forum and I'm sure you'll get used to it soon x

Thanks Vonny. Used to be on lots of sites -IA, MS etc. but seem to have lost the knack!

Welcome to the forum @BelindaR

I hope you find the forum a supportive, friendly and helpful place to exchange ideas and experiences.

If you are finding it a bit confusing there are some ‘how to’ posts here

Diabetes is a serious condition, but it’s also one that can usually be managed well with a few changes and adaptations - it’s something that you can learn to live well with, and it shouldn’t stop you doing things you enjoy. Try not to be disheartened about your diagnosis, many people on the forum later reflect that their diagnosis became a catalyst which prompted them to make positive changes towards a healthier and more active life.

For a bit more background information, the ‘useful links’ thread is a mine of helpful information - useful-links-for-people-new-to-diabetes

Members here frequently recommend Maggie Davey’s Letter and Gretchen Becker’s book, as very helpful starting points.

Let us know how you get on and ask away with any questions or queries as they arise - nothing will be considered too obvious or ‘silly’ 🙂
