Hi. Type 1½??

Most BG meters that also offer blood ketone checks just need special different strips. As @trophywench says, these are often individually packed in foil rather than supplied in a tub. I think they are about £2.50 per strip 😱

You might find there was a sample one in the box your meter came in?

The much cheaper (though less accurate) alternative is urine ketone strips, which you can buy from a chemists for about £5 for a pot of 50.
probably you are right 🙂 i wasted 3 strips . they didn't worked probably they were ketones strips 🙂

What colour were the strips? Were they in foil or in a pot? What error message did you get?

Diabetes nurse gave me set for free. it was 10 strip inside the plastic bag, all white colour. 3 of them didn't work. didnt give any error code just machine made bip noises and screen were blank.

That doesn’t sound like ketone strips to me. They usually look different to the blood ones on any dual meter I’ve had.

Hello and welcome @AmandaPanda l am rather late on this thread but picked up in the Type 1.5. When an older friend retired his GP diagnosed him as Type 2 merely because if age (5' 11" and 12 stone is not overweight wlh a healthy diet and regular exercise {walking, gym and swimming}). His BGs and HbA1c did not improve and his GP just upped the Metformin. The side effects made him virtually house bound and he insisted on seeing an endocrinologist (it was a bit of a battle to get the appointment). The diagnosis was Type 1.5 and his only treatment is insulin twice daily (16u total). Amazingly he still does the walking, gym and swimming! So control it and you will be fine for year to come...

P.S. His GP at the time still wound not believe it was Type 1.5 but Type 2 treated by insulin. I lost faith in GPs when I went to mine as I was concerned that my father, his brother and their father all died prematurely. He did nothing but gave me a virtual "pat on the back", and told me my BP and cholesterol (no checks despite the family history which the cardiologist classed as appalling,). The cardiologist carried out a multiple bypass a few years later and said diabetes was a complication not a cause (was GP's opinion!).

Hi @AmandaPanda

How are things working out for you now?
Has the weight loss settled down?

Hiya @SB2015 - thanks for checking in. I'm still at the same place. Meds still the same. Still feeling pretty rubbish. No more weight loss, although all my friends say i look ill as I've lost so much already. But at least it's stopped

I've got an appointment next week with a diabetes specialist at the hospital which I've got everything crossed for. My diabetes nurse at the doctor's surgery says she can't prescribe insulin without a specialist's approval, so here's hoping!! Unfortunately, the lovely dr I had at my first appointment has left, so I'm hoping this new one has his attitude!!

Fingers crossed it’s a positive appointment, and provides you with what you need.

Let us know how it goes <3

Well it wasn't exactly what I'd hoped.
1. He was very patronising and spoke to me like I was stupid,
2. He hadn't looked at my notes and didn't know that I have 8 other autoimmune diseases, and am pretty knowledgeable about the way my body works,
3. He didn't know what immunosuppressants can do to the pancreas and other hormone secreting glands, and
4. He refused my request to start insulin, even though my BG reading at the appt was 18.7, and instead wants me to double the Gliclazide dose.

All in all I was veeeerry annoyed when I left the hospital!!!!

Oh my goodness I am so sorry. What a nightmare of an appointment.

We’ve all had them from time to time, but that sounds particularly rubbish and non-patient-centred :(

Do you think it would be worth contacting PALS?

Forgive me, I forget if you have had your cPeptide measured. Do you know how much functioning beta cell mass remains. There is research that shows that hammering the last remaining beta cells with a sulfonylurea can sometimes hasten their demise. :(

Hi
I had similar I had my Glicazide doubled. Two am one at night. Once they got the blood tests as discussed they confirmed type 1. Eventually I came off Glicazide and I'm now on insulin. But that in itself throws up many challengers...many questions.
I was diagnosed late.
I hope you can get the answers you need.
Take care.

What difference does it make whether they are in foil or a pot?
I have had both BG and ketone strips in both pots and foil.
My current ones are in foil - BG strips are in blue foil and ketone strips are in purple foil.

He didn't tell me what my cPeptide was, just said it was within low normal range. By that point I couldn't be bothered to ask what it was. He was working off 6 month old blood tests, so I did manage to convince him to do a repeat cPeptide test.
I have just come off immunosuppressants (JAK inhibitors) which are proved to suppress the pancreatic antibodies. He didn't even know what JAK inhibitors were, but still said that wouldn't happen!!!

Who knows what this new test will show; but is it best to start on insulin even if its low normal?

It would be useful if you got the actual number of the C Peptide test from a few months ago. Your GP surgery should have it and/or the NHS app.

What difference does it make whether they are in foil or a pot?
Well if you read the post I was replying to, the person has a meter but is unable to work out for themselves whether they are testing with glucose strips or ketone strips. If they tell us the meter, whether the strips are in foil or a pot, and the colour of the packaging that is enough information for us to work out on any type of meter whatsoever whether they are using glucose or ketone testing strips. They were getting errors not numbers so we couldn’t tell based on the values.
