Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi
I’ve just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes yesterday.
Well, a bit overwhelmed to tell you the truth. I haven’t had my appointment with the diabetic doctor or nurse yet, I don’t see either until the 23rd.....so no medication prescribed but I have been told by my GP it’s likely to be tablets.
I don’t have any figures except my doctor said my blood sugar was 57 something or other, I was just given the other appointment, a load of paperwork to read through and a lot of worrying until then.
So, help! What do I eat... or avoid eating? If I have to have tablets, do I have to check my blood sugar daily? or more frequently? Lots of questions... no answers from my doctor .
Thanks in advance
Karen

Hello @KarenMU . Welcome to the forum. You will get lots of helpful advise and cyber support here.
It’s perfectly normal to be overwhelmed or even numb st first, but you’ll soon become an expert on your diabetes.
With right info and some work by yourself Diabetes is a condition that can be managed well.

As to what to eat, we’ll we are going to supprise you.
How do you feel about things like
Meat, veg, eggs, mushrooms, milk, butter, cheese , nuts, mushrooms . I hope you’re thinking yum, because they are fine as are many other things.
We usually have no problems with protein or good fats.
If you eat meat, all meat is fine as are high meat content sausages and burgers.
So you see, we don’t live on lettuce and fresh air

Our problem lies with carbohydrates especially the fast acting ones as they turn into glucose which our bodies now has difficulty’s dealing with ,so it build up in our blood.

This explains virtually everything, it’s very long,

Sadly it’s unlikely you’ll be prescribed a glucose meter but do ask.
If you decide you want to test to see how the various carbohydrates affect you, so you can make informed choice about you diet the the SD Codefree glucose meter
Is the cheapest one we know to self fund the ongoing cost of the test strips
around £8 for a pot of 50, where ones meters you buy in the chemist cost £15 + for a pot
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Codefree-G...fm-21&linkId=f39210144fdc26c27738e45b6d957003

And ask all the questions you need to , we’ll do our best to help.

Thanks for your reply Lin. It’s all a bit daunting especially because there’s a gap of two weeks between diagnosis and actually seeing the diabetic doctor.
I’m sure between now and then I’ll be reading everything I can get my hands on.

Hello and welcome to forum

Hi Karen and welcome to the club 😉 it is daunting to start with but once you get your head around the diet, it’s life changing 🙂 I’m six months in and would never go back to eating carbs, no more indigestion, no more bloating, constipation, feeling sluggish, tired and I sleep better.....that’s all on top of my bloods now being within normal range 🙄
Take some time to read back posts, all you need to know is here on the forum, take @Ljc advice and ask any questions you might have. Testing is really important to work out what foods work for you, try keeping a food diary for a few weeks and track your blood results with your meals 😛

Hi Karen 🙂, just to say welcome to the forum.

Hey Karen! I was diagnosed in August 21 this year! I felt same as you as doc didn't answer too much. Overwhelmed. But diabetic nurse is one to speak to. Also having joined up with this forum has been 'educational'. I'm on my 12wk trial to see if can handle my own diabetes situation without meds. But hasn't been ruled out that I may need meds. Just I don't want to go down that path; but will if needs must. I too was like 'what can I eat' as first thing that popped into my head was 'restriction of foods'. Mashed pots being my favourite was the ultimate disgruntled response to my doctor! lol! We're all different on here with who has what and what is best for each. Is a process of trial and error. So don't panic; take a deep breath and read on.....😉

Hello Karen! and welcome!

Being diagnosed with diabetes can be worrying and confusing, and the advice can be overwhelming, but take some comfort in the fact that you are not alone

You will get some advice from your medical staff, but this seems to vary depending on where you live, but besides that, the best way of looking after yourself is to do as much of the management, control, and treatment as possible for yourself. But here are some suggestions to get started -

Join Diabetes UK. They have - an interesting magazine; an introductory information pack for the newly diagnosed; a good help line

Read through as many of the previous threads & posts as you have the stamina for; especially for new members

Go to your library and read the books on diabetes. The advice and information might vary slightly with each book, and how old it is, but it will all be useful, and help you to understand how diabetes works & affects you, and will get you used to the jargon

As you read that information you will find more specific advice on what to eat, how to test and interpret the results, and so on

None of us wants to have the Dreaded D of course, but the good news is that it can be managed; I was diagnosed over 20 years ago and I don't have any complications. The bad news is that you have to really work at managing it, and that can get you down sometimes

Thanks for the response WHT.
It feels like I’m a bit in limbo until I see the doctor-next Friday, then the nurse -a week Tuesday. I’ve read a bit about diet and testing your blood before and after you eat, see what’s good for you ect, but how? I have no machine or strips.... even if I’m prescribed them.... I won’t have any for at least a week. Not even sure how I should feel if my level is high or low. I’m sounding like a complete idiot at the moment! So I’m sort of winging it until then.
