Still slightly in shock but diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes this morning, meeting next Thursday with the docs to start my journey 🙂 xx
Hi DaniB, welcome to the forum
🙂 Very sorry to hear about your diagnosis
🙂 How did it come about?
It can be helpful if you have some idea of what it is all about before you go in for your appointment, so I would suggest having a read of the excellent
Maggie Davey's letter (which Vince has referred to). It will give you a good overview and help you at the appointment, as often the information your nurse or GP gives you can go right in one ear and out of the other when there is so much to take in. I'd also recommend getting a copy of
Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker, which will guide you through the early months in a positive spirit and frame of mind
🙂 At your appointment ask your GP for a blood glucose meter and a prescription for test strips - they may be reluctant, but it is the best tool at your disposal for determining your tolerance for different things, and therefore able to tailor your diet to suit this. Read
Test,Review, Adjust by Alan S to understand how this works
🙂 No motivated person should be denied this facility, so be prepared to stand your ground if you are told you don't need to test, they are only trying to save money, and without it you will just be guessing. You won't need to test forever, just whilst you establish what foods you tolerate well, and what you should reduce or remove from your diet - this can vary from person to person, there is no simple list of 'healthy' items that you can work from, and anyway, that would probably be unnecessarily restrictive. Why cut out things you have a good tolerance for if you don't have to?
🙂
Diabetes is a serious condition, but it can be controlled well with the right information and application, so never be afraid to ask if there is anything that concerns or confuses you - even if we have heard it a thousand times we will always be happy to help, as we all were once where you are now
🙂
