Hi, diagnosed with type 1 four months ago after spending 13 days in hospital with Pancreatitis.
lost three stone in weight in the last four months, On Nova Rapid between 2 and 4units depending on what I eat, and 12 units of Lantus at bed time. keeping control of BG levels usually between 4.5 and 7.

Hi emmgeo, welcome to the forum. There are many changes for you to adapt to, so feel free to ask any questions you want to. No question is too silly. 🙂

Hi @emmgeo, welcome to the forum 🙂 Very sorry to hear about your diagnosis :( How are you finding things so far? It looks like you are managing very well with those numbers. I hope you are getting good support from your team, and it's good to see you are on an insulin regime that is flexible (there are some very rigid regimes that mean you have to eat certain amounts at certain times :( )

I'd highly recommend getting a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents and Young People by Ragnar Hanas, which covers all aspects of living with Type 1 - whatever your age, don't be put off by the title, I was 49 at diagnosis! 🙂 There are lots of links to good resources in our Useful Links thread, so do have a browse. Please ask away with your questions, there are lots of friendly, experienced and knowledgeable people here who will be more than happy to help - we've all been where you are now and know what a steep learning curve there can be 🙂 No question is considered 'silly'! 🙂

Hi
I am doing ok, not realy had much help from doctors or diabetic team at the moment, I have only seen a diabetic nurse once in four months that was to take my blood pressure and check my feet. I was released from hospital with some insulin pens and a few leaflets explaining about diabetes and one nurse had a chat with me then they let me go.
I have seen my doctor twice once was the second day I come out of hospital as I was having some realy bad sweats at night, turns out it was where I had come of morphine and tramadol tablets ( cold turkey) the second time was because I was having trouble accepting the diabetes and was feeling very depressed, I am ok about that now once I spoke to him , my wife and kids about it.
I have had some blood test since coming out of hospital
I have got an appointment to see a dietician soon so hopefully he will explain more about what to eat to control BG, because at the moment my wife and I are mainly learning from sites like this and the internet.
I have lost 3 stone in four months and feeling a lot fitter than I was
My meter reading over 21 days 5.8. 14 days 5.8. and today is 5.8 at the moment. at 2pm just before I ate my BG was at 4 so I ate a few more carbs and cut my Nova rapid down to 2 units instead of 4 units, as I have been out on my mountain bike just done 7 miles off road.
I have to go back to hospital on the 3rd of June to have an operation and once that is over I can start to move on.

Good to hear that you are already doing so well @emmgeo .

There is a lot to take on at the start, and I would definitely recommend the Ragnar Hanas book the @Northerner suggested. It is well explained and relevant at any age (I was 53 at diagnosis).

You are already starting to adjust your insulin and it will become easier once you start carb counting. Have they offered your u an education course? The one that I did was Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating (DAFNE) there are similar things in other areas, but I not only learnt about fine tuning my insulin, but also found it very helpful talking to other people with T1.

Keep the questions coming. Nothing is considered silly on here.

Hi
I am 56 it comes as a big shock and a big life change at our age,
I will get the Ragnar Hans book need all the information I can get at the moment.
To be honest adjusting my insulin is more luck than judgement, If I am above six I put 4 units in ,if I am below six I put less in, there have been a couple of times when I have had a chicken salad or similar meal and if my BG is ok I don't take any insulin, I check my BG about an hour and a half later and up until now I have been ok or lucky, I always take my 12 units of Lantus at night never adjust that one.
I have been offered an education course but god knows when that will happen as they said they need so many people booked on the course before they do it,
I am learning a lot from this site it is excellent,
