Hi it is JOV

I have added my correlation between HbA1c and waking average to the graph.

It is different to the the other graphs which try to take an average of all readings.

I am quite sure that you can predict an HbA1c from finger prick data with reasonable success but only if you ensure that that your data matches the way in which the model data was collected.

I'll have a look at how my waking reading correlates with my daily average tomorrow when I have worked out some queries in my data base to test the idea that your waking reading will reflect daily averages. I don't think it is as simple as it sounds.

I have been told several times over the years (by different HCPs) that of all the individual fingerstick readings you may take in a day, your fasting/waking reading is most likely to be closest to your average (though obviously is not guaranteed to be so).

Time will tell!!

I tried both converter formulae and they returned almost identical result of 34. I will find out the true result in a few weeks which I expect will be different. But an interesting experiment. Thank you 🙂

Well I had my 3 month HbA1c blood test on Wednesday and I am waiting for the results to pop up on the NHS App.

I have lost 2 stone and feel so much better

My morning average BGM reading is 6.3 mmol/L

I am hoping to be in the prediabetic range I have predicted 48 - fingers crossed.

My Results have just popped up on the NHS App.

My HbA1c is down from 81 to 44 mmol/mol – I predicted 48 based on my morning averages

Cholesterol ratio is down from 4.7 to 2.5 well below the level for meds

My albumin:creatinine ratio is up but mainly because my creatine is low rather than high albumin which I suspect is due to weight lose but I will ask for a retest.

I would like to drop the Statin and reduce the metformin to one a day - but I will chat with the diabetic nurse when I get booked in for a phone call.

So I am 2 stone lighter and now firmly in the prediabetic range – I am well chuffed.

Many congratulations on some really excellent results! Well done!

Well done great a1c reduction

What do you mean by below the level for meds? It sounds like you’re saying the improvement means you don’t need medication for this, but the improvement is because you’re taking statins

Possibly but the reduction maybe permanent - I only went on Statins out of an abundance of caution - normally statins are only prescribed above 5 - unless diabetic then it is 4. Some surgeries only prescribe statins if lifestyle changes don't work after a few months.

I only found this all out after I was put on them with no explanation - my aim is to go drug free.

It will still be the statins that has caused the reduction in cholesterol, if you stop taking them it will go back up

Lifestyle changes are just as effective - High Blood Glucose it self can raise cholesterol - so if diet, weight and blood glucose are under control why stay on a drug you might not need - if I come of it and the cholesterol ratio goes back up to over 4 I can go back on them.

Same as the Metformin - if I reduce the dosage and my numbers go back up I can increase the dose.

I have had little input from my Diabetic Nurse but she agreed the medication could be reduced and stopped if the numbers indicate so.

Congratulations on your results @JOV . Better than you were expecting by the sound of it. How your ongoing health continues with or without medication is very individual. Keeping your options open sounds sensible to me.

Never seen someone on the forum have a cholesterol of 2.5 without statins so I do think statins are more effective than diet changes, most cholesterol is made in our body not sourced from our food. Your choice on whether to try without them of course but if your age is over 40 you may find you’re advised to stay on them

That’s my understanding too @Lucyr

Lifestyle changes can have some effect in reducing cholesterol, and rebalancing the different types of blood fats, but it can only do so much, and after that Statins are a more effective option.

Huge congratulations on your brilliant results @JOV - you have every right to feel extremely proud of what you’ve achieved.

Hope the conversations about med tweaks go well with your nurse.

Thanks - I specifically asked about being able to come of the medications, which is my aim - but I was put on them with no explanation of what they did or side effects etc. I only gathered atorvastatin was a statin as it is in the name.

Other than a 3 month follow up bloods etc I have had no contact from my surgery.

Blood Test 2019 not told the result not flagged etc but I was pre-diabetic HbA1c of 46
Blood Test 2024 HbA1c of 81
Told over the phone initially I maybe diabetic another blood test required
Then phoned back DN saw 2019 result and said I was diabetic
What do I feel about medication I said I was not against them if they help so put on the Statin and Metformin - I asked and was told I could come of them.

Yes we have a few members who have been able to reduce or come off meds.

And others members who have chosen to reduce some, and stay on others. I suppose as a T1, my situation has always been different. there isn't a way for me to come off meds completely, so they have just been a fact of life since my 20s. 🙂
