Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi everyone, I was diagnosed by the doctor as being type 2 diabetes in September of 2015. I was put on 500 Metformin, and take this on a morning with breakfast. I have seen the diabetic nurse once since then which was in December. I have lost on myself last weight check a few weeks ago, nearly 2 stone since being diagnosed. I'm finding t really hard though to stick to a diet, I always have. Ive always excercised but I'm unable to do the excercises I could because of having two painful slipped discs, so I do a little exercise, sometimes sat I the chair, sometimes stood and just move on the spot, sometimes dance in the room, ( hoping no one cansee through the net curtains, Lol). I bought a monitor myself to check bs every now and again, normally my readings are averaging anywhere between 111 to 158, still too high really. I was horrified to see my result this morning being 242 before id had anything at all to eat. It is normal for my reading to be higher in the morning but this iis the highest its been. I checked again, 3 hrs later, forgot after the two hours and then it was 109, and then this afternoon again up to 168. I Had I Weetabix with semi skimmed milk this morning with my tablet also, and at lunch had some pkt noodles, (didn't eat full pkt) and 1slice of brown bread. So I'm wondering why my bs is high on the mornings and has gone up even though Ive not had that much to eat really, nothing sweet too. checked the noodles little fat and sugar in them.
Sorry I'm going on, so hello again all, I'm hoping to get to read more and learn something and anything I can help with if I know the answers to anyone elses questions. Kind regards Vickyo

hi Vickyo, and welcome.
When you give your numbers there, are you missing the point (ie 111 = 11.1) or are you using the American system (ie 111 = 6.2)?
Dawn Phenomenon is a common cause for complaint - that is, the liver pumps out glucagon into the system an hour or so before you get up, to 'prepare' you for getting up (yeah, thanks liver). Some people find eating a small low carb snack before bed helps, eg a piece of cheese. Other people will come along and give their opinions soon!
Also, I think you need to have a bit of a read around. Just because what you're eating isnt full of fat or sugar, it is all full of carbs, and thats what is important for diabetes. All carbs raise your blood sugar, not just sugary ones. Again, people will be along to suggest where you can get the help from (lots of links etc) soon.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

It's not all about sugar content in food that you need to be aware of. It's the carbs in there as well. Two Weetabix has 26 carbs for 2 biscuits and 5 carbs in the milk so quite a lot of carbs to start the day.

Carbs are converted into glucose by the body and used the same as sugar.

Have a read around the forums and see where you can cut carbs in your diet.

Hi Vickyo, welcome to the group...

Just looking at your post I see a number of red flags, namely all the foods you listed.... Unfortunately grain based products are no longer your friend, neither are low fat dairy products. The good news is that you are testing & questioning your results. One thing to note is that you can have some of these products (just read the carbs on the label), adding more fat to your meal will slow the release of the carbs into your blood.

Thank you Annette, Lyn and Martin,

I will have a look around the forum Annette, but that makes sense now what you've said, ts taking me a while to understand whats good and not good. It must be the American figures I'm using no dot in the figure. I'm not sure how to change my monitor to any other figure, ive checked but it doesn't show how. thanks again.

I only had one Weetabix this morning Lyn, but would normally have two, but will remember what you say from now on. Thank you.

Thank you Martin i will hopefully start to understand more with the help, Thank you.

NP Vickyo, it takes a lot to absorb all the information, 1 year in & I'm still learning.... and will be doing so for the rest of my life. Also, this disease is not "1 size fits all" which complicates matters. It's great that we have very supportive forums to help with advice & accountability.

I would try substituting your high carb items (the weetabix noodles and bread) for lower carb options and adding some protein and fat. If you just cut your weetabix is from 2 down to one, you might get hungry and snack ( I would!). How about scrambled egg or full fat yogurt for breakfast? For lunch try salads, omelettes etc rather than bread and noodles. Or an open sandwich with burgen bread. If you like pasta, try courgetti instead, eat lots of veg.
There are some great lower carb options in the food section. Good luck

Take it one meal at a time Vicky. Breakfast is an easy one to start with. When I was working I always had a couple of scrambled eggs. Dead easy to prepare and only takes 1 minute in the microwave to cook.

Another low carb breakfast that I love is that Alpro wannabe yogurt (simply plain) with some ground flax seeds in it. I buy the brown seeds from Holland and Barrett and grind them fresh in a coffee grinder. Half a big pot of the wannabe stuff, a heaped tblsp of flax meal. A tsp of Splenda (to take away the nasty taste of the wannabe stuff 😛) Leave overnight to thicken up and you are good to go.

There are other things as well. I am sure others will give other ideas as well.

I forgot to mention the Lidl protein rolls. Great for lunch time butty. They are quite large so one is more Han enough. Cheese and onion is my favourite :D

Hi

Hi Vickyo,
I'm a month in with type 2and I'm also finding the whole food thing very confusing. I've had to cut out dairy as well as my cholesterol is high which is even more of a struggle. I feel hungry even after I've had a meal. Sometimes I just have absolutely no idea what to eat!

Contrary to the popular myth, most of our cholesterol is produced in the liver from the conversion of excess carbs rather than dietary sources, 13 months ago my triglycerides we in the 600's, despite a diet low in fat & almost non-existent dairy... Now, adding the good stuff back in but cutting the carbs significantly, my triglycerides were measured at 102 at my last blood test.
