Hi everyone, I have only been diagnosed a month ago, and everyone is saying I'm doing really well coping with everthing, but like a swan calm on top and swimming on the bottom!

I'm on 10 units of long acting and 4 untits of short acting at meals time at the moment.

I have only just started to carb count my insluin to my carbs that i'm eating. But I'm finding the advice from the dietian and my mum (a retired dietitan) about vegetables confusing as the app i'm using is saying that some vegetables have carbs which the dietitan has told me to ingnore for example carrots and tomatoes. I'm don't think that advice is very good - it's ending up arguements with them as I don't think its very good advice as they say only carb count peas & sweetcorn, not things like carrots - I'm very confused on this advice. Has anybody had advice not to carb count veg and only fruit and starchy carbs?

welcome on board.
We are all different. I just need to look at a tomato and my blood sugar goes up! Yet lentils don't have much effect. There will be someone along soon who'll give you much more detailed advice.

Hello Rosy, and welcome to the forum. I think the problem is, everybody's different! And I think some dieticians just want to simplify things as much as possible, so as not to overwhelm you.
Some people can get away without counting things that don't have many carbs in them, especially in the early days when you might have a bit of your own sputtering insulin production left. I was told not to bolus for any snacks with fewer than 10 carbs in, but I very soon realised that doing that, I was never where I wanted to be, blood sugar wise, before the next meal, so started to count them. You'll eventually get a feel for things you need to count and things you don't, and it just needs experimentation and working out what works for you.

I dont count carrots, peas, or toatoes unless Im eating loads of them. I do count sweetcorn.
You need to find out your own tolerances- you may be able to eat them all without counting, or none.

Hi Rosy, welcome to the forum.....

Personally I take account of everything, however, having said that not all carbs are equal!!!! One has to consider the Glycemic Index, the higher the GI the quicker your BG will spike after eating.... This is perhaps the basis for the advice.

Thanks Robin for the welcome 🙂

I'm thinking that is the approach of the dietitian, so I don't worry about everything that contains carbs, as I have mild autism which includes anxiety so they are trying to make it simple for me. I do suppose it's a game of wait and see, to see if these do spike my levels or not.

Thanks for the Welcome Martin 🙂

I will have look into the GI in food to see if that spikes my BG levels or not, thanks for the advice 🙂

GI isn't such a huge issue for Type 1's - we need the carbs to 'hit' at the same time as the injected fast acting. If it's too slow getting there then we suffer.

I ignore veg - others than spuds in any form, parsnips and sweetcorn.

It's very early days for you and you probably aren't even on the absolutely smack-on correct basal dose yet anyway, so don't worry very much about getting it exactly right - cos it's most unlikely you will. This isn't your fault (unless eg you forgot you were diabetic and didn't jab LOL - Oh yes, we certainly do that occasionally, even after 44 years!)

As long as you are in the right area, and are getting the hang of it a bit, at the moment, then you're doing great!

I'm still in the early days, and are not on the right basal dose just yet till I start probably carb counting, I won't try to worry about getting it exactly right- as there will be room for error!

Thank you for the positivity, it's certainly does help 🙂
