Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi all
I am type 2 diabetic on metformin and for the last 4 days have been feeling unwell especially on an evening

Yesterday I checked my bloods which I havent done in years as I had to buy the stuff yesterday
Before dinner was 9.4
2 hours after dinner it was 18.3 and went up an hour later to 18.9
On waking this morning it's 9.9
I ate a tea cake for breakfast and lunch
And vegetarian pizza from dominoes for tea which I know is bad but I have nausea and gone off lots of food I had no snacks etc and drank coffee

It's scared me which is what I needed
So the help I need is where can I find a simple list if one exists of what is good to eat
For the different meal times

I ve struggled with food all my life and I'm at my wits end as I've followed that many diets I'm now confused what I should and shouldn't eat as they all contradict each other

Is there a diet plan that works best for diabetes

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Hi Jajatiaso...its difficult to answer the questions you posed without knowing a little bit more about your circumstances...although you are a new member it's not clear from your post how long since your diagnosis...just wondering how you were diagnosed...when you were diagnosed...do you know what your BG levels were at that time...when did you start the Metformin...the numbers you've given are high...however...given the tea cake and the pizza crust they're not surprising...not a criticism...the carbs in the crust & sugar in the tea cakes lightly to raise (spike) your blood sugars...I've found there is no perfect diet for my diabetes...what I find tolerable...may not be suitable for another type 2...if you can give us a little more information...it would help members offer the right advice/suggestions...testing your blood sugars is a great way to see if what you are eating will raise your BG...has this been discussed with you?...this is the perfect place for support...many of us have been in the exact same circumstances...it is a daunting prospect managing diabetes...but...with some work it does/can get better...try to post a little more about your circumstances...ask any question you feel relevant...I have no doubt other members will offer you some guidance...without any judgement or disapproval...keep us updated

Thank you for your reply

I was diagnosed four years ago and my long term numbers have always been good

I'm on 1500 mg a day of metformin the prolonged release which I've been on for about 3 years which has controlled it pretty well

I've definitely just noticed a change this week

I don't know if they can go up if you have a bug
as I am feeling like I have a hangover but without the alcohol

People have also been noticing a big change due to the weather this week. Some people's BG has gone down and others up.

Hi Jajatiaso...okay so four years into Diabetes...makes me a novice in comparison...in answer to your question...yes...illness...stress & anxiety can all help to push those BG's upwards...occasionally it happens for no apparent reason...it may be that you have 'something' in the offing...I hope not...but with the sudden rise after good control for four years...possibly the explanation...if that's the case little you can do about it...if it gets any worse...then you need to speak to your GP/DSN urgently...again there isn't a simple list of food that is suitable for all T 2's...its very much trial & error...since you are testing regularly?...you will be able to assess what foods suit you best...have a look at the 'what did you eat thread'...that will give you some ideas with diet...are you able to exercise...any increase in activity is beneficial...I'm not talking about aerobics...circuit training...or anything where you need to exert yourself...maybe just a little walking...more housework...you'd be surprised what helps...I am such a fussy eater...rarely eat veggies...so despite not having the best of diets...I have reduced my BG significantly...there are so many ideas here in the recipe threads...carbs section... have a look at those...don't panic...your sugars have risen suddenly...over the last seven days...so clearly there has been a change recently...an explanation...tell me when you say you have had good control...what is your usual BG level...do you have an HbA1c test regularly...I would imagine being diagnosed four years ago your reviews are most likely every year?...sounds like an inquisition...but...just trying to help with spotting thepossible reason for the sudden...recent rise.

Hi Jajatiaso and welcome. I've been diagnosed type 2 around 5 years and also on metformin.
Bubbsie has given you great advice. If you can try to reduce your carbs generally this should impact on your BG readings. I know you've tried various diets but have you lowered carbs yet? It will encourage you because you should see your numbers reducing.
However as your numbers are generally ok it could well be that you are coming down with something. Hopefully not. maybe it's time to have a chat with your diabetic nurse or GP?
Let us know how you get on. Hope you feel better soon.

Illness and stress can also affect

My HbA1 has been perfect for the last few years
I think it could be a bug I have picked up

I've started a diary today everything I eat and I'm going to check my bloods too

I will look at the food threads
I want to make a list of suitable breakfasts suitable lunches etc as I become obsessive with food it I have to think about it too much
So if I know I have a list of choices it'll make life easier

You've been so helpful thank you

We've all been there Jajatiaso...all those measures you quote hopefully will give an indication of where the problem is...in some way we're all obsessive with our food choices...we have to be...possibly not an obsession...cautious is what I would prefer to call it...so important we do all we can to minimise our BG levels...again...all the threads mentioned are great for ideas/suggestions...but...it really is a case if trial & error...so do experiment...fortunately you are testing...know how to use that information...so you have a good head start...keep us updated...be good to hear of your progress.

I have done low carb before I struggled a bit but
My plan is to reduce the amount I normally have been half by having more salad or veggies in its place
Hopefully that will work

I don't do very low carb but I reduced the carbs I eat that has worked for me and I have maintained mainly for about 4 years.

Hi Jajatiaso,
I was diagnosed about 10 months ago with type 2 and I am still finding out what I can eat and what I can't eat I am also finding out that exercise can really play an important role in controlling blood sugar levels, one to which I would not have thought of. My trouble is that I can be good for quite a while then I still have cravings for carbs, which I have not got under control yet. I know we all deserve a treat every now and then but that is my challenge for the future, keep trying and be positive I have never had so many compliments about how well I look since I started my new life with diabetes.

I was diagnosed last year, I eat low carb according to Dr Atkins, checked my blood glucose to see which foods did not increase my BG over two numbers after a meal and have normal levels for glucose and my cholesterol is going down.
I do not eat bread, rice, oats, potatoes - nothing densely carb, feel great, need to keep buying smaller clothes. I gave up on the tablets as they made me so ill and they were affecting my memory and intellect.
I am now not even in the Hba1c range for diabetes as I dropped to 47 in February

Well done, cutting out all those carbs must have been very hard, what do you eat instead

Not at all - I suspect that I have been diabetic for a long time, but I was never able to eat carbs without putting on weight really fast - no one seemed to believe me when I said that diets didn't work, nothing but cutting out carbs ever made me lose weight, so I am used to eating low carb foods. I eat lots of salads, omelettes, and stir fries, lots of low carb veges and also small amounts of low sugar fruits, I make several sugar free jellies each week, and have a big freezer and two fridges for all the fresh and frozen foods.
I really do prefer to eat low carb, and often wonder why people seem addicted to such boring stuff as pasta and potatoes when they could be eating shrimps mixed salads or Greek yoghurt and frozen berries or even strawberries and cream.
