I am 52 years young and I have type 2, only diagnosed 2 weeks ago. Used to be very active and fit till I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia 5 years ago and herniated discs in my lower spine, which hinders my movements. I’m currently on Metformin.

Hi Sez69, welcome to the forum.

I know it can be quite a challenge to manage fibro and diabetes so I'm glad you've joined to get some extra support.

Do you know what your HbA1c number was? It's the result of the blood test they use to diagnose diabetes. It just helps to have a starting point so you can set some realistic goals.

Testing your blood sugar at home is also helpful, so as not to overwhelm you with info, feel free to have a read of this page which will help you get to grip with the numbers and testing information that you'll need to know. https://www.diabetes.org.uk/guide-to-diabetes/managing-your-diabetes/testing

If there's anything we can do to help, please let us know.

Hi @Sez69 and welcome to the forum.
How are you getting on with the Metformin? It is considered to be the safest of the medicines for Type 2 diabetes but some/many find they get 'the trots' or other digestive tract problems with it and so have to try the extended release version or even drop it entirely.

Fortunately it actually has less impact on Blood Glucose than does replacing carbohydrates in meals (starches and sugars) with added protein and traditional fats.

Don't stress about inability to do aerobic exercise - if you can only exercise you upper body (strength/muscle building) then that is enough to help reduce your Blood Glucose (muscle absorbs glucose from the blood).

I bought a mini exercise bike - one that you can put on the floor or table. I can work my arms and upper body, or legs whilst sitting down, and I have "music while I work", or boil a kettle. But like you I have 3 missing discs and a twisted pelvis, and my next door neighbour has fybromyalgia. We both find being in the swimming pool is the best way to exercise, as water supports us. I try and do three 45 minute sessions a week - most swimming pools seem to be open until 8pm or later, for workers.

I'm on slow release Metformin, and after initial problems seem to be settling down. If you've had "the trots" it's worth asking to be switched, particularly if it is disrupting your work. You should take the medication in the middle of your evening meal, a sort of pill sandwich!

I suggest you look through the Learning Zone (orange tab at top), just one module a day, to take it in. Many Type 2 benefit from reducing their carb intake, me included. I use an app to measure my carbs and there are several like MyFitBit and NutraCheck. There's no hard and fast rule, just trial and error. When you've had a chance to take in the information, you might want to come back with questions. If you are not too far into the diabetic range, you might just need a few tweaks to your lifestyle. Best wishes
