Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi All - So pleased to have found this site and forum. I received the news yesterday 27th December 2017 that a recent blood test had come back with a reading of 49 which had tipped me into the category of diabetic. Feeling a bit stunned and swimming in treacle (sorry for the pun) at the moment and do not have to see the diabetic team for another month. I have read some of the forum and the advice seems to be for the moment to cut down on carbohydrates and I do not need to cut out totally. This is good news for me as although I am not vegetarian my husband is so I tend to eat a vegetarian diet and we eat a lot of pasta, potatoes, pulses etc.
Any advice or comments would be appreicated.

Hi Crispy, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but it does sound like they have caught it early, so hopefully with a few adjustments you will be able to bring things under good control 🙂 Have you come across our 'Useful Links' thread? If not, I'd recommend having a browse - there are links to lots of good resources in there 🙂 I'd particularly recommend reading Maggie Davey's letter and getting yourself a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker - these should give you a really good grounding and lots of ideas 🙂

Start a Food Diary so you can measure your current carb intake - record (in grams) the amount of carbs in everything you eat and drink each day, then use the diary to look for areas that might be improved on by replacing or reducing certain items. The trick is to tailor your diet to your body's tolerances, so people's experiences can vary widely. Ideally, you should test your levels so you can measure the impact of your meal choices on your levels. If you haven't been given a meter an prescription for strips then it's worth getting your own whilst you sort out your tolerances. The cheapest option we have come across is the SD Codefree Meter which has test strips at around £8 for 50. Have a read of Test,Review, Adjust by Alan S in order to understand how to test efficiently and effectively 🙂

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns and we will be happy to help! 🙂

Hi Northerner - thank you for your prompt reply and comments I will certainly have a look at all you have suggested. it just makes you feel a bit easier when there is someone out there. Thank you once again xx

You're very welcome 🙂 I should have added, any regular exercise you can manage will also be an enormous help 🙂

pasta, potatoes,
Hi Crispy, welcome to the forum.....

I found that some adjustments were actually quite easy & improved the quality of my diet. I used to eat a lot of rice & pasta, but these days I just replace them with green leafy vegetables. For example I'm more likely to have a curry on a bed of spinach than anything else; broccoli has replaced potatoes & spaghetti squash pasta (we also use edamame noodles in place of pasta).
