Hello all. I'm newly-diagnosed with borderline diabetes. Really hoping I can reverse it. Please will somebody tell me - is it ok to put a little glucose powder on my cereal, and is it ok to eat honey on my bread? (Hope nobody's confused about the applications of the word Fructose. High-sugar corn syrup is called 'fructose', but it is not real fructose. Fructose occurs in most fruits, some vegetables, and honey. Real fructose does not involve the pancreas). However, I read on the internet that honey, glucose etc can cause the formation of triglycerides, whatever they are. I'd be grateful for some help from somebody a lot more experienced with managing diabetes than I am!

Welcome to the group, Hilary

Carbs in all their forms are a problem for us, some worse than others.... As a strategy it helps to cut or reduce bread, rice, pasta & starchy vegetables like potatoes, replacing them with green leafy vegetables. As for sweeteners I find that they all spike my BG so I avoid them, if I need some for a recipe then I use stevia.

Dietary cholesterol is a minor source of cholesterol in our blood, the body manufactures the rest from glucose, many of us have reduced our cholesterol by significantly reducing our carb intake. I think that many members of this board consume in the 50-150g a day for their carb intake.

As in put sugar on???? Don't put sugar on, in or anything else.

Sorry, dumb male here. You lost me. Why are we talking about the use of the word fructose?

Fructose increases BG exactly the same as any other carbohydrate and we all have to find out our own personal tolerances for every edible thing that exists and we wish to eat - cereal has shedloads of carbs for starters so why the heck would anyone want to make it higher carb anyway - but especially if you also happen to have a problem with carbs (ie diabetes, pre-diabetes etc etc etc) in the first place?

Get a meter and test before eating and again 60/90/120 mins later (as spikes in BG differ in their timing so you have to discover when yours is, for that item of food) - see what that tells you - you'll soon see whether you can eat it again or not!

Hi Hilary

I too have prediabetes. Diagnosed about 5 years ago. I was overweight and went on to lose 3 stones. My BG returned to normal levels. I have since put the weight back on (much easier than getting it off!) following a couple of tough years. My latest hba1c was 6 which is just on the borderline of prediabetes and I am determined to get the weight off, adjust my lifestyle and beat this thing! You have come to the right place for help and support. I dint know anything about fructose except that it is found in fruit and certain fruits push your BG too high. Berry fruits are best. If you are able to test your blood sugar before and after eating, you will find out what you can tolerate. Welcome to the group and the very best of luck to you. Katie

No. :D

Till you know what spikes your BG I'd leave the cereals alone, forget the honey it's just another form of sugar and I've no idea what glucose powder is but the thought of it makes me feel a tad sick. Corn syrup is lethal stuff imho. Eat as naturally as you can and you wouldn't go far wrong. I can't eat bread, it makes me feel ill and I don't honestly think it's good for anybody but that's just my opinion. Make sure you're drinking enough water.

Hello and welcome to the board from a fellow newbie. :D
