Relationship to Diabetes

Thanks for the add! I have type 2 diabetes, blood sugars are quite random at the moment. Wondering if this is because of me starting a new diet (slimming world). Not having as much sugary food yet still on same meds!

Hi Anita, welcome to the forum 🙂 How long have you been diagnosed, and what medication are you on? I haven't been on SW, but we do have members who have had good success with it. I seem to remember there are different 'colour' diet plans available, but can't remember which was thought the most appropriate and successful for Type 2. Remember, it's not just sugar that you need to pay attention to, it's all types of carbohydrates -bread, pasta, rice, potatoes etc. - so you may need to look into your consumption of these on the diet. fine for non-diabetics, but they will all raise your blood glucose levels with Type 2. Do you test your blood before and after eating to see how the meal has affected your levels?

Hi there, thanks for your quick reply! I've been diabetic for about 10 years following an intense course of steroids to treat a chronic lung condition. I suppose for the first couple of years I refused to believe that it was a 'biggie', and continued with the lifestyle I was. (Although in my defence I did give up smoking, and drinking alcohol was never really a biggie!)
I am currently on 1gram of metformin, twice daily, 10mg dapagligloxin (or something!)! My weight has dropped by over a stone in a year, my GP is good with this, I have lost about a further 8lbs in the past 2 months, and my BM has become quite erratic. It even dropped to 3.9 overnight on Tuesday of this week! Rang GP, (locum) and she didn't appear concerned although I told her that I had been feeling unwell for a week or so. She told me to stop the dapagligloxin (or similar) yet this was the drug that bought my blood sugars down to an acceptable level! I know I won't be able to get an appointment with my GP for a fortnight, bur it does bother me that I could become hypoglycaemic and not really know what to do. By the way, thanks for the advice re carbs. I think I had it the wrong way round!! X

You don't need to worry about a 3.9 on your current medication - it's low, but around what a non-diabetic person might expect to see 🙂 Do you test when you feel unwell so that you can see if your blood glucose levels might be a factor? Losing weight (great job!) tends to make us more sensitive to the insulin our bodies is producing, so it's sensible for your GP to reduce your medication as your situation improves 🙂 Sometimes, when you have been used to having higher levels for some time you can experience symptoms of a low blood sugar when your levels are not actually too low or need treatment - as you become more accustomed to lower levels generally, these symptoms should go and you ought to feel better more of the time 🙂 If you are feeling rotten and your level is around 4.0 then having a small biscuit will raise your levels a little and the symptoms should ease 🙂

Aww thank you for that! I am going to try minimising my carbs now! Don't quite know how, when they are a big part of anyone life! Somehow fish and salad just doesn't sound the same as fish and chips does it? Any more than bangers and salad/mash does! I know it's down to me to sort my diet out if I want to reduce my meds and live a 'normal' life! Just feels a bit mean that something that helped cure one health problem has created another!
Will pull myself out of the doldrums now, and just 'get on with it' xx

Sometimes it can be as simple as swapping ordinary potato for sweet potato, or going further, using cauliflower rice instead of ordinary rice etc. There are some good ideas in our Food/recipes section that should help - you can still enjoy your food! What you need to do is follow a routine as described in Test,Review, Adjust by Alan S so you can find out what works well for you and what doesn't - you might find that you tolerate some of your favurites perfectly well! 🙂
