Hi There

I'm Ben, Aged 27 and had diabetes type 1 for about the last 15years.

My blood control as of late hasn't been great and was recently admitted to hospital with DKA

My biggest challenge wasn't understanding Diabetes as it was really maintained when I was younger but as I've got older the time it takes for testing and fitting this in with my busy work days.

It's safe to say though that the DKA episode has opened my eyes again and with the help on the Freestyle Libre machine (which is fantastic I must add) and some dedication and family support it has really helped to turn things around.

When I started on the new machine 2 weeks ago my average reading was 14.1, as of today the average is down to 10.2. Still high but definitely going in the right direction.

Currently on Novorapid and Levimier insulin.

Looking forward to increasing my knowledge by looking at these forums and gaining advise from others with Diabetes.

Hello Ben and welcome to the forum.

Welcome aboard. everyone on here is very helpful and supportive.

Hi Ben, I'm also a pumper and recent convert to the Freestyle Libre. I have found this forum very helpful: had not heard of the Libre til I came here.

Hi Ben

I was on Levemir and Novorapid when on injections, and found that splitting my Levemir to part in the morning and part in the eveining really helped increase my flexibility. I was able to change my background as well as my basal in the morning if I knew I had a full day of activity, otherwise I simply used a mix of Basal reduction (for something that was going to happen within two hours of meal) or an appropriate snack before the activity if later than that.

I also found it very useful to review what had happened over the week and look at whether I needed to change any of the ratios (carbs ratio, sensitivity or correction ratio). Since having the Libre I have switched to use Diasend which collates all my results from handset (and pump for me) and matches it up with the Libre graph. Much easier to review what to do,a and if you want to you can share the results with you DSN for some advice.

If any of that does not make sense just keep asking. That is why people come on here. Very happy to help.

Thank you, makes perfect sense. I too split my Levemir into two (morning and evening). I think my biggest challenge at the moment is working my diabetes with my work/day. I currently get up at 5am during the week and don't get home till 7:30pm which means eating quite late. During the day is fine as I can test and snack where necessary but my biggest challenge at the moment is eating late and making sure I don't take too much insulin so I don't have a hypo in the night.

I work really funny shifts, find that if I have an unusual meal time, I make that one carb free and don't bolus.

Welcome Ben, I too like my Libre. I have just climbed Scar-fell pike in my 50yr of T1. Had a sensor on & my bg was very nearly perfect all day 🙂

Well done, fantastic achievement.

Glad the Libre is working well for you too. They just need to make it free on the NHS now and promote it more. I'm sure everyone would prefer the Libre over a finger prick
