Hi,

I was diagnosed with Type 2 hi ust before Christmas but I was not going to have a dry sugar holiday lol !

I am now starting to watch my diet and take my tablets.

I would really love some help please regarding diet, as this is downfall. My diet has been for years, not much during the day or pick on a few biscuits and then a bowl of cereal in the evening (granola, honey nut cornflakes, etc) and then the frequent sugar snacks when I felt tired etc, so most of the time ☹️.

I have started in Monday by not having any sugary food, so pretty much cut out all sugar and cooked meals in the evening.

Today I feel rubbish !!! So tired and woozy feeling.

What advice would you have for me please?

Welcome @Moody cow It’s great you’ve made a start by reducing/removing sugar, but it’s all carbs you need to watch, both sweet and savoury. So, sugar, bread, pasta, potatoes, rice, biscuits, cereal, etc.

What was your HbA1C when you were diagnosed? That will indicate how big a change you’ll need to make to your diet. A good starting place is to write down what you ate before diagnosis and go through looking for places where you can maybe reduce carbs and add green veg. As you mention lots of sugary snacks, I’m sure cutting those out will help a lot once you get used to the change. Do add in some things to replace them though eg veg, protein, etc.

Welcome to the forum, what a time to be diagnosed with all that temptation but brilliant that you are now getting to grips with making some changes. As said how far into the diabetes zone you are will determine how much work you will need to do but you mention tablets so I surmise you are a fair way into the zone. What might those be as that will help people to make appropriate suggestions.
Many find a low carbohydrate approach works for them but it may depend on what tablets you are on as to how much you should reduce your carbs.
Reducing carbs gradually over a few weeks will be kinder on your body as it adjusts but definitely cutting out the sugary snacks, biscuits and cakes, sugary drinks including fruit juice and reducing portions of high carb foods.
The book or app Carbs and Cals is a good resource as it gives carb values for portions of a whole range of foods or there are other similar apps.

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis @Moody cow

But glad you have found the forum 🙂

It’s not unusual for people to get a bit of ‘kick back’ from the body when making an adjustment to their way of eating - even if the new menu will ultimately be much better for them! So don’t be put off by a bit of bodily grumbling.

Do you struggle with finding flavours and textures that you like? or is it more that you find it difficult to find the time or enthusiasm to prepare meals?

It sounds like your former menu was quite limited, and vegetables & fruit don’t seem to have figured very highly, so I wonder it you were taking a multivitamin to try to make up for any lack of micronutrients?

Hope you can find a way of eating that suits your BG levels, gives you more energy, and which you find interesting and enjoyable enough to maintain long-term.

There are lots of folks here who have managed to find that balance in a way that works for them, so hopefully you’ll get some pointers and encouragement to find your own way that works for you 🙂
