Welcome - how are you getting on with it so far?

Good day all. It's my first time in here. I have been supporting diabetes uk for nearly a year now due to my father who used to have it before he died. Now I have got it. I shall work hard to reverse it.
Hi John, welcome to the forum 🙂 How did your diagnosis come about? Unfortunately, as you probably know, a family connection with diabetes can increase your own personal risk. Have you been given any medication? I would suggest asking your GP or nurse about diabetes education courses in your area - all people with a diabetes diagnosis are entitled to attend one. Also, you might find some of the resources in our 'Useful Links' thread helpful - in particular I would recommend reading Maggie Davey's letter and getting a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker 🙂

Please let us know if you have any questions, and if we can help you in any way 🙂

Hello to you John.

I thank you all folks for welcoming me in the forum. Tell me something where did those with type 2 get their gloucose meter for measuring their blood sugar levels? Was it from their GP or did diabetes uk supply it?

For the last 2 weeks I was on one Metmorfin tablet and this week I am on two tablets.

Hello John. Welcome .
If you're gp practice refuses to provide one, sadly most of them do unless your on diabetic meds that can cause hypo's low blood glucose (Metformin usually doesn't)
Many here use the SD Codefree meter as it has the cheapest testing strips we know of , around £7 gor 50 where others are over £15. It's only available online from Homehealth, we use the mmol/l measurement in the uk and your entitled to claim VAT relief.

Or Amazon

You'll need to buy more test strips and a box of lancets as they only provide 10 in a starter pack.

Hello John and a warm welcome to our friendly supportive forum - I echo @Northerner & @Ljc's words - you will learn much from following their advice & suggestions. Feel free to ask as many questions as you wish - no question is silly and there's plenty of us here who will be willing to answer them for you.

I take it you're not a complete novice where diabetes is concerned with your late father having had the condition - but today this is about yourself. There is so much to learn about your diabetes - how you will manage it - with diet - exercise - and the reduction of carborhydrates. The least carbs we consume the better as they have a nasty habit of elevating our bgls (Blood glucose levels).

Do please stay in touch as to your progress and dont forget we are here to help and guide you on your diabetes journey so you're not alone. Take care now
