Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello , I have been a type2 diabetic since 2007. I've had a long relationship with diabetes and this has been exacerbated by other serious medical conditions along the way. I've been through a variety of stages with the condition, from trying to control my glucose and lose weight and control it all through diet and exercise, then through a variety of oral medications and since having had a bad DKA incident in the autumn of 2020, I have stopped all oral medications and I'm only taking insulins. My weight gain has been dramatic this year and although my glucose is overall better controlled, I still need to work harder to live more healthily with this condition. I'm hoping to learn more about the condition itself, learn and share new methods and techniques on managing the condition and on losing weight whilst having it and taking the insulin. If there are any other type2, insulin dependent members I'd be interested in hearing from you and benefitting from any of your experiences - especially on exercise, weight control and diet. Equally, if you have been newly diagnosed and want a bit of guidance, I'll try and help and point you in the right direction where I can. Thank you, Marlon.

Welcome to the forum @marlonkirkham

Thanks for sharing your story so far. Glad to hear that the insulin is allowing you to control your BG levels better this year, but sorry to hear that you‘ve been seeing some weight gain.

What sorts of insulins are you taking? Are you on a fully flexible basal:bolus (multiple daily injections) system? Or on a twice daily mixed?

Are you keeping track of your carbohydrate intake and matching your meal doses to balance the insulin? What would a typical day’s menu look like for you?

Interesting that you experienced DKA - as I understand it, this suggests that you have absolute insulin insufficiency. Do your clinic think you might have been LADA all along? (that’s a slow-developing form of T1 that can look and behave quite like T2 to begin with).

Fire away with any questions you have, and maybe check out the exercise and weight loss boards?
