Type 1
Afternoon everyone, just wanted to say hello to you all and introduce myself.
Well my wee boy has just been diagnosed with having type 1 diabetes and my head is kinda scrambled at the moment so I'm hope you guys could offer some advice/tips that will get us started.
Thanks
Dougie

Hi Dougie. You have come to the right place for some help and advice. I am not surprised that you feel befuddled at present. There is a lot to take in at the start and it is a steep learning curve but things really do get easier. Keep asking questions on here and you will receive lots of help.

There is a special section on this forum for parents, where you will read the experiences of them (but don't limit yourself to that part as we will all want to know how you and your son are doing).

I will jump in before Northerner gets here and recommend an excellent book Type 1 Diabetes in children, adolescents and young adults. A source of loads of info to dip into, and a great reference with lots of practical advice. Not something to be read from cover to cover but it is full of practical ideas.

Your son will soon be back at school, and usually the Diabetic Specialist Nurse (DSN) arranges a meeting with you and the school to discuss how to manage things. There is an excellent T1 pack provided specifically for parents and another for school. These are available free from Diabetes UK. Have a look on the website for the section for parents on there.

Don't forget to come back with any questions you have. W are here to help

Welcome Dougie. Sorry to hear about your boy's diagnosis - a huge shock I imagine. How did he come to be diagnosed? There are some great tips etc at the top of the newbies section and I really recommend the book Type 1 in children, adolescents and young peopl by Ragnar Hanas. It isn't cheap, but is a brilliant resource. Also JDRF do a pack for newly diagnosed children, which might be worth a look.
What insulin regime is he on and how are you all doing?

Welcome, Dougie...no doubt you will still be in shock.. i know when my wee boy got his diagnosis i was. This is a great forum and you will find plenty of advice. How is your wee boy coping? Is he managing to do his own blood sugars and injections?
Carbs and Cals ... get it downloaded to your phone..i also find my sugrmonster a great app as well...you will find both on google play.
I am still new to this as well, Cameron was diagnosed on 30th June...its a bit of a learning curve but you'll find your diabetes team are on hand and my nurse also went into the school to train the teachers..

Welcome to the forum Dougie, sorry to hear about your son's diagnosis. How old is he? What does he say about his situation? What's important in his life? Sports, hobbies, art, music, wildlife, animals etc? What help and support are you getting from diabetes team, particularly DSN (diabetes specialist nurse)? One thing to remember is that it's most difficult at first, both because everything is new and because of honeymoon phase, so it feels like doses of insulin need to change almost every day.
Ask away!

Morning all, thanks for saying hello. So to answer a few of your questions, he was feeling unwell and we took him to the doctors who fired him straight up to hospital where he has been for nearly a week now but hopefully he'll get out within a couple of days. He seems to have taken the news well although he has had a wee cry on a couple of occasions which is to be expected. He is good at his injections and testing which is great.
The DSN has been great and given us loads of of info and help but it's a bit worrying that we'll be going it alone sooner

Hi Dougie, really sorry to hear about your boy's diagnosis, but good to hear that he is starting to come to terms with it. There can be a very steep learning curve with Type 1, but do try and take your time to understand things, and if there is ever anything you are unsure of, please ask your team or on here - we will be more than happy to help 🙂 Do please get a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents and Young People by Ragnar Hanas - it's a little pricey, but an invaluable reference 🙂 There are links to many other good resources in our Useful Links thread, so do have a browse. For yourself, you might like to read Adrienne's essential guide for parents of newly-diagnosed children, written by a parent and explaining how you may be feeling right now and what you may expect as time goes on.

There is a wealth of knowledge and experience here, so do please draw on it whenever you need to - no question is considered 'silly', so if it is bothering you, then ask! 🙂 And bear in mind that, though serious, it is manageable, and it will not stop him from doing anything he wants to achieve in life! 🙂

That is great if he is doing his own testing and injections... best way to start off.. and it means he is in control, especially good for in school.
You'll soon learn all about ratios...carb counting..free food etc...
This site is great, you'll be assigned a disbetes nurse and attend for regular checks. The diabetes team are great x

Welcome Dougie ! You have joined a good site for info & nice people 🙂
