Hi everyone,

Diagnosed last week with type 1. Still can't get my blood sugar under control. Probably 'cause I eat like a gannet. But I'm sure I'll get the hang of it.

Hi Bob, welcome to the forum 🙂 How did your diagnosis come about? It's very early days, so try to be patient - learning how to manage your blood sugars takes time and experience. What insulin regime are you on? I'd highly recommend getting a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents by Ragnar Hanas, the best book available for people with Type 1 diabetes - whatever your age!

Let us know if you have any questions and we'll do our best to help 🙂

Last Monday (the 7th) I was thirsty all day. And the following day, more thirsty... and so on and so on. Friday came and I felt like a filtration machine. Off to my GP and diagnosed almost immediately. I've been given Lantus (10 units per day) and Nova Rapid. Told I can carb count with the NR and take 1 unit per 10g or carbs. I'll check out the book. Thanks. 🙂

Sounds like you caught it quickly, which is good news 🙂 That's a good flexible regime you have been given. Bear in mind that the 1 unit per 10g is a starting point, and you'll probably need to adjust the ratio over time - it's a good idea to stick to a fairly boring and predictable diet for a while, and keep a food diary, noting down the doses of insulin and the grams of carb in what you have eaten or drunk. Also, by noting down your pre-meal and 2-hour post meal blood sugar levels you will gain an idea of how you are affected by particular meals, and will be able to spot where you might need to adjust your insulin doses. Have you been offered a carb counting course?

There is a lot to take in to begin with, but in time you do start to see patterns and learn how you are likely to react to things. Always keep a hypo treatment on you or within easy reach at all times (I prefer jelly babies 🙂).

It's definitely a lot to take in. Evening's are the worst when I get hungry for snacks. Luckily, my wife has been great and is on top of things more than me. She bought a big bag of fruit pastels for incase of a hypo.

You can snack on things like cheese or nuts, neither should have much effect on your levels 🙂 When I was diagnosed I hadn't eaten for 5 days (ended up in A&E with something called DKA, which makes you very sick), so when I got out I was ravenous all the time 😱 Things started to settle down after a while though. It's partly due to the fact that you are now getting the insulin that your body was lacking prior to your diagnosis, and this increases your hunger.

Hi Bob, welcome.

Another book/app I find useful is Carbs and Cals. It's ace. It will give you some idea how much carb is in whayever you pl to eat and make it much easier to calculate your Novorapid,

Cheese and nuts sounds good. Just makes me want wine though. Ending up in A&E. That sounds bad. I was lucky, I guess. I was giving my mum a rare visit on the Thursday and she spotted my symptoms. I dismissed them (of course!!) but went to the doctor on the Friday anyway. Always listen to your mother.

Hi Alison. The nurse gave me the Carbs and Cals book as part of my package. Had a look at the app. £3.99? Worth it?

Hi Bob
Going though the same right now so feel your pain.
Guys on here are a great wealth of knowledge.

Hi Susan
The site looks great. Definitely helping hearing from others. Been diagnosed long?

Hi Bob

I've got the app and I'd say definitely worth it, especially if you are eating out, because it means you don't have to carry the book everywhere! Just have it on your phone and off you go!

Welcome to the forum by the way 🙂

The book and app should to my mind be standard issue for diabetics. 🙂 The app is a lot more portable than the book, though you may need to get it to pre-load the database if you are going to use it somewhere where you haen't got an online connection...

Welcome Bob, glad you found us. The app is definetely worth it for your phone when you are out and about, saves carting the book around. How is the carb counting going?

Definitely, very convenient when you're out and about. Much more portable than the book.

Got the app now. Does look very helpful. Carb counting going well -- I think. Blood sugars just not coming down as much as I would like. But it's early days. So not panicking.

Might be that they need to up your basal, what are your readings like in the morning and before bed?

Welcome... Control - what's that?:D!

Welcome to the forum Bob. 🙂

Morning readings are about 10 and night time ones are about 16-17. Not been a week yet so hoping to get that down in the next few days.
