Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I have been a type 2 diabetic since 2012 however I have only just joined this website. From then until very recently I have been blissfully ignorant of my diabetes and just how serious it might be. I had my eyes screened and a checkup annually and everything must have been okay as I never needed any type of follow up. Indeed everything was quiet until the next checkup and so it went on. When I was first diagnosed I did attend the first of a two part talk at the local hospital near to where I was then living. I fell asleep halfway through the talk/meeting and never went back.

Then in September last year I decided to take myself off the metformin I was taking. Don't ask me why as I am afraid I have no logical explanation other than I had beed swallowing these pills since 2012 and I decided that they couldn't be working that well as I still had this diabetes thing.

Back in June this year at my annual check up my blood sugar level was 81. I then got a call from the diabetes nurse who strongly suggested I went back onto the metformin.

It is up to you, as presumably you were at levels thought to be OK when on the Metformin - but many people can get back to normal eating a low carb diet - would that be an option for you or are you already doing that?
Do you test your blood glucose levels after eating? That is how I know what to avoid.

Hello Anthony and welcome to the forum.
Your June blood test result certainly indicates that it would be best to take action to try to bring your blood sugar levels down.
The 3 things that will help to do this are healthy diet, exercise and medication. Metformin will help, but you may be able to reduce the need for this by working on improving the diet and exercise, as many of us on this forum have done.
There are several options on what eating plan to follow. Many of us choose to do this by reducing carbs. If you have a look at 'Maggie Daveys letter' available on the 'Links' section of this website this will give you some ideas on this.
There is a lot of help and information available, so please ask us on anything you are not sure about. It can all be a bit confusing at first, but the results will be well worth it.

Thank you very much for your help and advice. I didn't want to bore you to much by rambling on with my introduction. So to update you I have changed my diet and am now following a low carbohydrate diet. I joined and attend the local Gym three times a week most weeks. Having had another blood test in September blood sugar had dropped to 67 from the previous 81. I am due to go back for another check in December.

Well done Anthony.
You look to be doing very well, and good luck with getting a good result in December. We'd love to know how it goes.
Hope that you are enjoying the Low Carb eating. If you are ever stuck for ideas, have a look at the 'Food/carb queries + recipes' section.
