Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I was diagnosed with type2 approx 6 weeks ago and am just coming to terms with it.I think this forum is superb as it is full of useful information which can help guide a person through their experience.

these are my test results so it would be great if i can please get some feedback on how good or bad they actually are?

i am 48yrs old:

Hba1c: 49.0 mmol/mol (6.6%) on 21/04/2017

Blood Glucose: 9 mmol/mol on 21/04/2017

blood pressure:148/78 mmHg

total cholesterol:5.0 mmol/L on 24/04/2017

Creatinine:71.0 umol/L on 24/01/2017

Albumin/Creatinine Ratio:0.6 mg/mmol on 24/04/2017

Weight: 102.4kg (16st 2lb) on 29/03/2017

(probably around the 15.6st approx now)

Height:1.72 metres (5ft 8in)

BMI: 35 kg/m2 on 29/03/2017

NEVER SMOKED

MODERATE DRINKER

Re my weight i have not been weighed since March 2017 but i have lost 4 inches off my waist size so far through healthier eating and being more active, trousers were around 40" now into 36" waist.🙂

I love porridge and eat a 50g bowl (organic) most days (SOME SAY THIS ISNT GOOD FOR DIABETICS?),have plenty of veg(broccoli, carrots, sprouts, spinach)chicken, tuna and fish during the week.Fruit wise been eating bananas, pears, peaches and blueberries/rasps in low fat Fromage Frais.
Bread wise which is my achilles heel I now have 2 multi-grain and rye pitta,s with tuna or chicken salad(spinach, tomatoes, spring onions) filling instead of bread rolls such as Ciabatta.
Another downfall for me is chocolate so i have cut down to at most 4-6 squares of Tesco low sugar chocolates dark/hazelnut at a time.
At weekends i do have small treats and a few drinks but still do manage what type of food i am eating.
I am working very hard at managing my diabetes as i wish to keep it under control for as long as possible without taking any meds.

any advice would be much appreciated.

kind regards

Hi mrbubbles and welcome to the forum. I have porridge most days for breakfast too. There isn't a one size fits all with diabetes and what one can have another might not, porridge is a good example of that. Same with fruit, I can no longer eat much fruit as it spikes my blood glucose too much.

Hi @mrbubbles and welcome to the gang. As Stitch says, there is no one size fits all unfortunately. I can also tolerate porridge i.e it doesn't spike me much, although I am 'fortunate' in that I can cover the carbs I have with insulin.
Re your results, these are the guidelines
Total cholesterol 5 or less, ideally 4 or less in diabetics
HDL 1.2+
LDL 2 or less
Triglycerides 1.7 or less
Creatinine 50-100
Albumin 35-50
Blood pressure 90-120/60-80
Non diabetic up to 42, pre diabetic 42-48, diabetic 48+ mmol/l

As you are doing, reducing carbs, as they all turn to glucose is good. Best veg is the non starchy kind especially green leafy veg. Re bread, many of us on here use Burgen bread which is 11g carbs per slice which is lower than most other kinds.
Looks like you are doing the right things, so continue and good luck!

Welcome to the forum, it is a great place to come for advice. Foods effect us all differently, some can tolerate porridge and others can't as an example. The thing to do is test yourself before and after eating food to see what effect it has on you. Try Burgen soya and linseed bread - great for me and I don't spike much when I eat it.

Hi Mrbubbles, Welcome. As you can see by the info Greyhound girl has given, you are only just over the threshold of diabetes, which hopefully will give you some reassurance. It is a lot to take in at first isn't it.

You've reduced your carbs which is very good, we turn the starchy carbs ie pasta, potatoes, rice and bread esp white into glucose fast. It doesn't mean we can't have any, other carbs take a bit longer , it depends on how our own bodies react to them and to be honest the only way we can find out is by testing ourselves just before meals then two hours afterwards.

If you haven't been provided with a glucose meter, Do ask for one, sadly most T2s who are not on medications that can cause hypo's (metformin doesn't) are given one or enough test strips to be of any real use. Many excuses are given including, it will only upset you, it hurts (it doesn't), you only need the Hb1ac. We here think it's a cost cutting measure that will only cost the NHS more money in the long run.

Welcome to the forum Mrbubbles. Well done on reducing your waistline. That must have had an impact on your weight, BMI and probably blood glucose levels. What sort of activity / exercise do you do? That's important as well as what you eat.

thank you so much everyone for your replies it is much appreciated.
This week i have ordered some testing strips and a glucose meter etc so i can look into what best suites my body re food.
Re the question about exercise it is generally football and cycling at the moment, with the odd weight session thrown in a couple of times a week.

Hello and welcome to forum mr bubbles

hi guys

well bought a glucose meter and started testing this morning.

first result after no food since night b4 at 11am was 6.3mmol/1

2 hrs after eating decent size portion of chicken, veg and 2 x multi-rye pitta bread was 7mmol/1.

i am thinking this is pretty good, can anyone confirm that is the case?

any other useful info with regards to testing myself daily would be much appreciated.

many thanks

ps if this is in the wrong thread please do move

Hi bubbles feel like I'm talking to jackos monkey hehe.
I'd say those figures are pretty good. Aiming between 4 and 7 is ideal for us diabetics

thanks Steff

and to any new posters thanks for saying hello, much appreciated.

a quick question how does alcohol effect diabetes?i only drink once a week at most and its usually a few beers and vodka/diet coke with no food during....should i try and eat something during the session to offset any expected rise in BG?

Hi.
I'd say like most things diabetes related just drink in moderation I assume your a sensible person so don't go overboard. Just make sure any meds your on don't counteract with booze
