He's just had a skin cancer on nose and has a tumour on brain could this be one of the reasons why his test is so high he's a bit depressed at the moment carnt do any excersise due to balance probs and feeling fatigued all the time

Ibby - I'm so sorry your husband has so many things going on at the moment, and I can imagine they're bound to make him feel down a time times.

Its impossible to speculate why his A1c is so high, just on what you have said. Certainly some medications can have a role in raising blood glucose numbers, but I you say his diet isn't the best? I'm afraid that's likely to be at least factor in it all.

Please don't think I'm being critical of him, because as I say I couldn't even speculate on things, and I have zero idea how I would react in the face of his challenges, but it is usually true that even on insulin, most T2s need to be mindful of what they eat and drink.

Is your husband interested in any tweaks to things at the moment, or is he just getting by day to day? I'm assuming somewhere along the line there could be an appointment to discuss the latest results?

He's started having a bit of sweet things at Xmas and now couldnt stop. He hasn't got an appointment with the doc to decuss anything the test was done by the team that's doing his tumour op now he's not eating much at all hope it dosent stop the op.

Hello Ibby

I'm sorry your husband has so much to manage at present, all manner of things can affect blood sugar.

Has his control changed recently, do you know what his previous HbA1c results have been? Does he have a meter to check his blood sugar or is he reliant on a 3/6 monthly HbA1c?

High blood sugar can make you feel very fatigued, an HbA1c of 98mmol/mol converts to an average blood sugar over approx the past 12 weeks of 15.1mmol/L. The range for T2 to try and aim for is 4-7 mmol/L before meals and no higher than 8.5 mmol/L 2 hours after meals. Obviously he has a lot of worrying things to deal with which all contribute to pushing up glucose levels with stress etc as well as being unable to exercise due to balance problems.

I'm sure the team dealing with his surgery will be in touch and advise on how best to proceed. I wish you both well.

Fingers crossed for him and his op. Often an elevated A1c can cause issues, but it depends on the op and lots of other factors.

It could be helpful if your husband could maybe be persuaded to stick with meat and veg for now, but avoiding spuds.

I appreciate all this must be so difficult. When do you next see his medical team?

Unfortunately when we have a high blood glucose - absolutely everything takes longer to heal. This applies whether it's a paper cut on the side of a finger, a broken bone or a planned major operation - so it is NOT good.

Sorry - he and you need to be strict with his eating to ensure the op can proceed and to get over it again afterwards successfully. It isn't just sweet stuff - all carbs need to be restricted cos diabetics can have difficulty with any of them.

That Hba1c does show that your husband has had high BG for quite a while, which could be a reason for a planned operation not to go ahead.
It could also be feeding the tumour.
Some problems delight in high blood glucose as they can't use ketones for energy, so lower BG levels can slow down their growth.

Hi lbby, have you looked at the soya and linseed bread called burgen sp* that might help out as lower in carbs. If that's not an option how about having an open sandwich so one slice of bread and pile on the low/carb free topping so hubby is full.

Sounds like you know bread is unlikely t be his fried at the moment?

Up date hb1ac now 74 diet better and doing testing regular . Diabetic nurse up the insulin by one unit which seems to have done the trick, still waiting for op appointment which they say June / July but feeling a lot better.
So getting good test readings 6s and 7s and a few 5s in the morning before dinner between 4 and 6 then tea time don't test so often but about 8s then bedtime ones between 5 and 8.
Hopefully hb1ac has gone down even more before op .

Those test readings look like a summary of mine and my last hba1c was 41 so here's hoping. Congratulations all round are due, it seems to me.🙂

Sorry to hear about all the challenges your husband is facing at the moment @Ibby

Hope he can make some changes to his eating habits to improve his BG levels (which will help with mood, energy and recovery after the op.

Perhaps start a food diary alongside blood glucose results to try to spot patterns and see what is causing what. Very often it’s hard to accurately remember what we are actually eating as often we graze without thinking.

Best wishes to you both. Let us know how you get on.

Thankyou I hope the hb1ac is as good as yours

That looks more encouraging Ibby.

As others have said it is important to manage his levels as other conditions will be affected by these. Having a record of what carbohydrates he is eating alongside his BG readings will help you to see patterns and to do some swaps or reduce portion sizes if necessary.

I hope that you get the news of the appointment soon.

It sounds like you are getting to grips with things and have support at your Practice.
Good to hear.
