When I was first diagnosed I had hair loss for a couple of months to the extent of waking up and my pillow was covered in hair each morning. Now thankfully I have a lot (and I mean a lot) of hair because it's really thick so i'm lucky i didn't have bald patches. I was told by my hairdresser that when your Ill your hair does sometimes fall out and not to worry. My blood sugars were really high when I was first diagnosed so I accepted it as part and parcel.

I've noticed the past couple of days that it's happening again and although my blood sugars have been a bit unstable as of late I haven't really had any high blood sugars for a sustanible amount of time. So I am slightly worried because it's coming out in chunks again. Was just wondering if this has happened to any of you and whether this is normal when blood sugars have been a bit all over the place for a period of time?

Thanks for your help in advance

It hasn't happened to me, but if it did, I would ask my GP about it. Hope you get some explanation and solution.

Hi Emma,
If you haven't had your thyroid checked lately might be worth doing as this is a symptom of an underactive thyroid. Anaemia also cause hair loss.
Uncontrolled diabetes is also a cause, So best pop along to GP and see what's going on.
Best wishes
Sue

Ah Sue Ty That May Explain It For Me Then I Was Told I Had Anemia Tuesday

Hi Emma,

Yes this has happened to me.
2 years ago when I was in hospital running high sugars and with diabetic keytone acidosis I lost a lot of hair. It was my DSN who noticed actually when she came to see me on the ward and all this hair was on my pillow, and the sheets had just been changed. She said it is very common in high sugars to have hair loss. My HbA1c at the time because of the DKA was about 14%, so pretty high. I was really, really symptomatic at the time, bad thrush and hair loss and she assured me not to panic, my hair will grow back strong after a little while. Thankfully she was right. I would consider talking this through with a health professional to give yourself peace of mind.

My hair did grow back as normal. I have long, thick hair and so really it was only noticable to me but yes, I understand the worry so I would recommend getting in touch with someone.

Hugs x

my hair falls out quite alot - and blocks the shower (gross)

I went to the doctor for heart palpitations and they checked my throid. apparently it's fine, so im putting it down to high blood sugars.

I also found I was losing hair and my scalp was very dry and itchy when I was first diagnosed, but it's stopped now. It was quite traumatic to see how much came out every day, at the time, so I can relate to you being worried. Obviously having some insulin helped, but I also bought some dry scalp shampoo and conditioner from Boots, which soothed the itching.

Hope you get it sorted soon, try the GP and get everything checked out.

Do get the hair loss checked out. hair loss is normally a graduall thing (as in male pattern baldness). If it is sudden, there is normally an underlying cause. One friend was under a lot of stress through family illness her husband was made redundant, she was taking exams to get promotion in her chosen career as a social worker, her work was very stressfl. Once she she had done the exams and her husband got another job and her family got better the stress eased and her hair began to grow back. o get everything checked out.

I'm glad I'm not the only one then. Thank you all for your advice and that's a weird coincidence steff. I'm one of those annoying people who won't go to the doctor unless I really have to. Like before I was diagnosed I left it two months until I went to the doctors and was told I was probably diabetic. But I will go because I have another reason to go anyway so might as well get this checked out at the same time.

hehe im the same emma, i try not to go to the doctor! but since getting diabetes it feels like my second home 😱
