I love the bassoon and regret not learning it

Me too. I know now that it's what I should have played, but at the age of 11 when school music lessons were offered, I hadn't even heard of the bassoon. Bass recorder is the closest I ever got, no lessons for that in the 80s, just a lunchtime club.

Sadly I missed out on ever learning an orchestral instrument as my mum has a low threshold for beginner-quality music practice and wouldn't sign the permission slip for free violin lessons. As it was I had to go to the end of the garden to play my recorder, until I got good enough to be allowed indoors!

And we must be distant neighbours at any rate, I'm near Bitterne Station.

Well she does teach at the best music school in the world (Royal College of Music)

Hoping some of it rubs off on one of her new pupils.

My granddaughter goes to the Guildhall School of Music on Saturdays for trumpet. Shall we agree the two best music schools and call it quits? But what a coincidence she was there!

We are on our way to Wales to visit my sister, niece and nephew as it's the children's birthdays and they are having a rock climbing party. 7yo is super excited!

I remember getting really excited when I received a Scottish or Irish note at my Saturday job. Even though it was the 80s there was never any suggestion of refusing it, but it was a chainstore. Perhaps a small business would have been less keen.

Two places family have lived where you legally had to change your banknotes for sterling before visiting the UK are Gibraltar and St Helena, people used to save any UK notes received from tourists and keep the stash at home (often leading to burglaries) as if they banked them they'd only get local ones back.

Try beansprouts instead of fried rice with your Chinese meal

I normally have bean sprouts instead of noodles but I wanted to try a portion of special fried rice with prawns and veg as it is one of my favourite dishes. Unfortunately it didn't like me.

60s Boys' School talk. The world's moved on.

I did French from 1st year ( now year 7) and then started German in the 3rd year. Taught by the same teacher! I preferred German. Unfortunately, come O Level time it all unraveled, my French/German teacher, who was British, was the examiner for the oral part. In the French oral exam I kept speaking German. “Ja, I mean oui!” And so on! Total disaster! So I not only spoke German I spoke English! A big no, no. Hence the mediocre result! I did get a decent pass in German, which I’ve never used but have visited France quite a lot!

I was going over the bridge and the weather changed from brilliant sunshine to torrential rain in seconds Croeso i Cymru haha.
We did have brilliant sunshine after the party though and spent a nice afternoon in Rogerstone Welfare Grounds, complete with ice cream.

5.2 this morning we have just come indoors from a very busy day did the usual Weeknd shop, then went to buy a few plants on the market stall, ended up buying loads and the prices were amazing, I must stop buying plants, then we went to Home bargains and ended up buying a lovely water feature which was only £29 I the same ones new on Ebay were £50 so very happy with that, then a completely random purchase we decided to paint the house got a lovely pale grey but it looks more like an eggshell blue, so daughter and her boyfriend got in at 3 this afternoon and we have completed the back of the house so far

A very early Father’s Day Sunday Good Morning to you all & have a Wonderful Day! 😉

Little Miss Stubborn With A Bee In Her Bonnet just couldn’t stop doing the dishes ALL day yesterday & through the night: 6th load in now; last one as I need to TRY & get some sleep before the family Sunday Lunch today! Table booked at 12:30 for 9 of us at The Royal Court Hotel Sunday carvery just outside Portrush so, being picked up around 11:00/11:30 & have set my alarm for 10am to get ready: already said to “rich & famous” brother he can take my picture; must make myself look as decent as possible!

WHY was I SO determined to get as much dishes done as possible in 1 day, I hear you ask? Well, it’s the OVERWHELMINGLY strong chemical smell of the Fairy Platinum dishwasher tablets that I’ve had to put the kitchen extraction fan on at full power & the smell gets to my sinuses & throat so, had to ding ready meals & eat in the living room! Food has tasted weird all day! Want to get it all done & then, leave the fan on for another day to get rid of the smell! Almost done & think 1 more load will finish the dishes & maybe 1 more for a couple of pans if they’ll fit? If not I’ll soak them in the sink & do it by hand.

TRY & sleep now & a big rush to get ready when alarm goes so, might as well post now! Otherwise, I may well forget!

Dozed on & off throughout yesterday in between the loads. Tonight I’ve had sudden big drops that I realise is the effort of loading & unloading the dishwasher & reaching up to fill the tank with water! I was ok during the day but, had to eat fudge twice tonight after I’d eaten dinner!

I’ll have to change the washer tablets: I forgot when I bought them weeks ago now, that I’ve always hated the very strong smell of Fairy Platinum washing up liquid & only used the normal one despite the platinum one cleaning faster, easier & quicker! I can’t have the kitchen SO toxic smelling when the dishwasher is on! Can anyone recommend a brand of dishwasher tablets that’s not too nasty smelling?

MUST sign off now & try to sleep!

Oh! 05:19 BS 6.7 with a diagonal up arrow: BS will be ok now; last fudge piece brought me up to the 13’s until I unloaded load number 5, loaded load number 6 & filled the tank! Before the penny dropped & it’s all the effort in the middle of the night that’s making my BS drop!

Morning and a 7.2 for me and a high night and lots of insulin after another monster carb evening but was delicious and well worth it.
We had a choice of French or Latin at school so no problem choosing the one most useful but again would have preferred German as it would have come more natural being a guttural Geordie.
In fact my biggest Language Achievement was somehow passing my English oral where we had to recite Shakespeare and be understood which I found very difficult.
Went for a walk last night as so pleasant and off for Lunch today.
@Pam123 congrats on HS and my wife has the same “ buy more plants” disease but as long as it gives her 0lrasure I don’t mind as Happy Wife Happy Life.

Another low alarm in the night and I was running low all day yesterday so I will drop today's abasaglar down a couple of units. I guess it's the warm weather as nothing else has changed.
Currently 5.5 with a bit of a headache so I think a coffee is required.

Co-ed ex-grammar comp for me. Languages were for everyone but tennis was for girls only. Woodwork and metalwork for boys, sewing and cooking/home economics for girls. Golf and sailing for boys. Javelin was for everyone and so was rugby. But the girls played touch rugby.
Oh how times have changed.

I went to a girls' grammar school and we had to play hockey and netball in winter, tennis and athletics in summer. Hated them all!
We all learned French but could add another language in second year, so I did Spanish and also Latin. No metalwork or anything like that, just home economics and needlework which were thankfully optional after the first year.

Happy Daddy Day

Admittedly that does sound slightly lascivious this time of a Sunday morning

Saw the preview of Hercules yesterday and will post here what popped on to Reddit yesterday:

Sat in the middle of the front stalls for this afternoon’s matinee.

It’s a mess.

There are issues that you’d assume will be ironed out in previews (sound issues, lighting issues, prop malfunctions) but there are also those that really should have been ironed out way before previews started. Those include casting, poor songs, non existent book, and a general feel of a production more akin to a regional panto than a major West End production.

There were lots of families with children present and their buy-in is essential for the longevity of the show. It doesn’t bode particularly well that most of the five to eight year olds that I could see were bored way before the end of the first act.

I had been told that the second act was significantly better/more entertaining than the first but it wasn’t. Hades’ big fight was anything but and by the time he’d done there were even children asleep.

I’ve given it a lowly 1 1/2 stars and that’s partially for the set design which at times is great.

Joel Benjamin stands out in the cast and is a high point.
