Hi

Just to say that by following the lower carb advice on here and the general advice in Dr Cavans book about no more than 30g of carbs at each meal I have got my Hba1c back to prediabetic levels (45) after only six months.... at diagnosis my hba1c was 49. Also lost half a stone in weight though I did not need to. Diabetic nurse I saw today was happy with me .. did not moan about my blood testing and does not want to see me for a year.

I have also done loads of walking and aqua classes and this has also helped.

Woo hoo!

My HDL cholesterol has increased to 3.1 trigs 0.5 total cholesterol 6.2 but she was happy for me to stay off statins (was not going to accept them anyway) as my ratios are good.

I do eat a lot of fish but I think that cutting down my carbs has helped get this result.

Wanted to share this news to encourage others.. it does work!

So a big thanks to all you guys and girls in the forum for encouragement.

Well done

Excellent results @Forgetful55! Well done! 🙂 Thanks for the update, and I hope that things continue to go well for you 🙂

Well done @Forgetful55. It was obviously a day for results, I also got mine too. Keep up the good work! 🙂

Hope yours are good too.

Well done Forgetful55. My diabetic nurse offered me a 12 month review after my first 3 month review after diagnosis and I declined and asked for 6 months. When I had my 6 month check up last month she again said she was happy not to see me for a year but I again declined and asked for 6 months as I know I will go off the rails without the thought of hb1ac check up. She's happy for me to keep testing and has renewed my repeat prescription for strips ( I get 1 pack a month). In addition to this I bought my own code free meter as I test obsessively and don't think they would give me enough strips on NHS (prescriptions free here in Wales so I don't mind paying for additional strips and tend to use 1 meter for 2 weeks at a time).

I am going to continue to test at least once a day .. I know if I don't I could go off track quickly.

I am trying to keep my blood sugars around 8.5 or less after meals but as long as they stay below 9 5 I am not stressing too much.. I walked a lot today(about five miles) and it makes so much difference, had a small fish and chips (no batter) in the pub after the clinic at a pub lunch with my son.. and salmon potato and green beans tonight and my blood sugar was 7.3 normally its around 8.5 to 9.5 ish after my main meal. But without testing it would be so easy to let things slide. If my blood sugars do creep up I can always phone the docs and get an earlier appointment for the review.

It never entered my head to ask to come sooner?

Well done @Forgetful55 🙂. Sounds like you have a good DSN. I've been told that if my next HbA1c (results due in a week) are below diabetic levels, I will be taken off the diabetic register. I would imagine that means I won't get seen again. I will definitely keep on testing, as like you, I could quite easily go off track.

This is really encouraging! Well done. I am noticing that by cutting carbs for me is the right way forward. Levels are down and I can see when I have strayed the effects it has on my readings. Sleep needs better regulating as that is effecting my morning values but am encouraged by also the weight loss that comes from eating differently and by lots of exercise - for me!

Excellent news, @Forgetful55 :D ! And good for your nurse too, who sounds very sensible. Continuing to test is a good idea as it's so easy to fall back into naughty ways 😱

I'd like to say a big well done too. It takes a lot of self discipline to stick to a low carb diet. My review is imminent. I tend to be a bit naughty when it comes to carbs but try to compensate by doing a lot of exercise. So far this has worked very well but each review is always a worry.
