Relationship to Diabetes

The clue is in the title. I know that none of us want to have Diabetes,
and can list endless irritations about it but, having developed it
what, if any, benefits do you get from having Diabetes?

I know that I
- am a lot more aware of my own body
- take more care over choices of foods.
- have had a free prescriptions since diagnosis
- am a lot more organised
- get a 6 monthly 'MOT'

Very true, I eat better and take better care of myself. I need to start some kind of exercise, I'm thinking of Pilate's and yoga. I can't do running due to dodgy knees 🙄

Pilates when taught well is absolutely brilliant, as the exercises isolates muscles and groups of muscles, and also develop core strength. I would recommend it.

I don't eat the same c**p I used to
I'm saving a fortune because of not buying said c**p
I very rarely drink alcohol now
Most importantly I'm alive and if it hadn't been picked up due to my 3 monthly contraceptive visit, it might have gone the opposite way x

I still drink red wine, in moderation of course o_O

I'm more aware of what my body is telling me.
I hardly snack now
I get a three month (iPad put mint🙄) MOT
I get to see NHS podiatrists, whether I need to or not.
I'm going to get 2 pair of free, specially made for me shoes
Free prescriptions since diagnosis
I eat tasty nutritious food
I've had to buy myself bigger handbags 🙂

Aye aye Lucy 🙂 II still have a vodka and diet coke on a Saturday sometimes, never could stand wine 🙂 x

Thinking about this seriously. I'm not doing too well just now, but certainly don't look to buy the same amount of rubbish. Have my moments but not nearly as often. I know the danger foods for me, and try to avoid them. There's a packet of ginger nuts festering in my cupboard with about 3 out of, and they have been there for a month. Look out birdies, here comes pudding

SB2015. Good things about Diabetes? Hmm! I wish I wasn't so unfortunate as to have the damn condition - but seeing that I have and you asked, then:-
I suppose I am more conscious of what I can or shouldn't eat since dx - especially carbs
And like Ljc, I am more aware of what my body is telling me - of which i seriously take notice
Also there are some similarities in Carol's post to myself.
Healthier dietary regime
To exercise more as and when I can.
Of course I've allowed myself treats but try to adjust the carbs in my next meal.
The benefit of a free meter kit to keep a watchful eye on my bgls. This is vital for me.
*Last but by no means not least - there is *Diabetes.org.uk & the *Forum which is an absolute treasure from which to glean *Infomation & support.
Edited.

Good to know what impact foods have on my body and being able to do something about it. Good to be given annual eye checks and other health checks. It's good to be aware of vague symptoms such as tiredness and headaches and to understand that diabetes may be the cause.

I don't think that I would be exaggerating when I say that being diagnosed gave me a whole new life. My determination to get myself fit after diagnoses led me to return to riding my bike, to going swimming and, via the parkruns, taking up running. From there I have taken up doing triathlons and I'm loving it. I've traded in my old pear shaped body for a really lean and toned one. I had to replace all my jeans with smaller sized ones and then had to do it again because I just kept getting thinner. There isn't really a downside at the moment because I am controlling my condition so well. I am well aware that the future may not be so rosy but I'm taking care of myself as well as I can in the hope that I can hold off any problems for as long as possible.

Good things for me would be, always getting to choose where to go when eating out...... That's all I can think of for now!

Errrrrmmmm.....

If I hadn't been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, I wouldn't have got better.

I wouldn't have joined this forum.

I wouldn't have realised there was a new life out there for me.

I wouldn't have met my fiancee.

I wouldn't have married her.

I wouldn't have had my new life!!

Andy 🙂
