i'v just ben diagnosed with type 2 and given all the bumph,i'm totally confused on the fruit/veg intake.my nurse altered my leaflet and told me only 2 portions of fruit/veg a day but diabetes uk sez lots more than this, has the official line been changed does anyone know?pls:confused:

Hi there Hector I was told have as much veg as i want but be more catious with fruit (i have 3 pieces) as alot of it contains fruits,r.e grapes etc, bananas can also cause the blood sugars to rise, i find apples and satusumas are ok for me but you may find there not its all about finding out what suits you best.x

Hi Hectorzaza, welcome to the forum 🙂 The thing about fruit is that it can affect your blood sugar levels quite a lot as it contains quite a lot of sugar. Vegetables (except potatoes) generally do not affect your levels nearly as much so it's good to fill up on them. Have you been given a blood glucose meter so you can do your own fingerprick tests? This is the best way to learn how different foods affect you and what you can tolerate best - people vary greatly in this respect. I'd suggest to you look at the Useful Links thread for some good tips:

I'd recommend the book on GL Diet as a good starting point for learning about different food types and how you can combine them to achieve more stable blood sugar levels, also the book by Gretchen Becker is a great introduction to what to expect.

Please feel free to ask any questions, there is usually someone around happy to help! 🙂

p.s. do you have a frog-like friend called Kiki? 🙂

Hi from Hector's House...i'm Zaza by the way!! Kiki lives in our pond!
thanks for the info,i'm at that very daunted stage where everything seems to conflict.yes have got glucose meter so will use as a guide for now, just don't understand why my nurse actually changed the leaflet to 2 and 8 for breads/cereals etc instead of 7/14..ambiguous!!

hi Steffie,thanks for the advice....gosh it's a minefield!!

Yup sure it is, all trial and error for us, we just cant tell whats going to effect our levels well not all of the time...Are you on medication or just diet/exercise at the moment?

Welcome Hectorzaza.
I'll move this post to Food / carb queries, which will help it stay visible for longer and also show you another part of the messageboards.

As a vegetarian I was told by my dietician to eat as many veg as I wanted and lots of fruit, so I have to say I am just enjoying doing just that. If they tell me different I will have to find something else to snack on !!

Hi hectorzaza

if you want a good structured framework for eating and testing, try Jennifer's Advice (I think it's on the links page that Northerner posted earlier)

take things one step at a time, there's a lot to absorb in the early days. Stick around here, and ask the amazing T2 's any questions that crop up

Hi Hectorzaza,

Welcome. I was diagnosed just 2 months ago, and the amount of stuff I've learned just through this forum and trial and error mainly!

I test first thing in the morning, before even having anything to drink. Immediately before a meal and 2 hours after. Longer if I've had slow releasing stuff like oats, beans.

Interestingly, I find stress raises my bg more than foodstuff. I get white coat syndrome even before I enter the doctor's surgery. The other day, I tested before breakfast 6.8 and at the doctor's it went up to 12 (unheard of). It came right back down as soon as I got home.

Bear that in mind.

Donna 🙂

hi hectorzaza.... not sure if I've welcomed you to the forum.... but if I haven't then 'welcome' and if I have then just blame it on the brainfog:D

I have just been diagnosed and was told to eat 'plenty' of fruit and 'lots' of green leafy veg lol. but I've found that different fruits have different effects. for me plums are ok.... but pears, bananas and oranges send my BG levels up

it is all trial and error🙂
