I tested my blood sugar last night, after having my tea of a smallish baked potato, with a bit of Kipper, the result was 7 after about two hours. OK thinks I, not as good as I hoped, but I will still indulge, have a little sweetness, so had an Asda, Free from chocolate bar. ( No dairy;eggs; animal products, etc.) It contains in its 35 g of lovliness, 20.3g of carbs/ 12.6g of sugar, so I know it is a risk of a spike, but an hour later I test and it is now 6.1! 😱 About another hour later it is down to 5.3! 😱

What is going on, this is the second time I have had this happen! I am now doubting my own sanity. ( Never mind, another dent in my confidence over the Codefree meter! )

Worst thing is, I am going to have a chippy meal tonight, ( yum, yum! ) the first since July and I intend to test, to see just how high my blood sugar will go, over several hours. I am now left wondering, if there is going to be any point to that testing though. :(

Must admit, if I have something that I know will spike me, I don't bother testing. I've had fish & chips from the chippy 3 times since diagnosis. The last time I had it I tested & spike at 9.6 2 hours after. By morning I was back down into the 5's. I also had chicken & chips a few months back & spiked at 8.5, so this assumes it's the chips rather than the fish that's the issue.

I get where you are coming from Mark, but I like to know what is going on, which is why I bought the meter I guess. 😉 I had the chippy meal: Fish and Chips and two hours later, my reading is 9.7, the highest it has been since I began testing. I will test again, because that is not as high as I was expecting. Whatever the reading though, they were bloody lovely! :D
Now after 3 hours, it has dropped to 7.7. Which is better.

I keep having chippies and my bg keeps spiking...the thing is it does come down a lot but I don't think this is good because isn't it the ups and downs that are bad for us? We're supposed to be keeping things level aren't we? I must step away from that darned chippy. :(

Well, three and a bit hours after, my bs is 6.7. so it is going I the right direction. 🙂 You are right of course, consistency is he key, so luckily for me, as I live away from a chippy, I will not return for a good while. Get strong Ditto. 🙂

Hi Greymouser. I’m no expert but am wondering if this is more to do with lessening of insulin resistance ie, your own insulin is now more effective because of the changes you have made

Their will be a way of testing the meter, some meters have a special test strip or you may need some control solution , if you check your manual it will tell you what you need to do.

Good idea Lin, that never occurred to me. Doh! I just assumed that choccie would give me a big spike.

The fat in chocolate slows it right down for me. Certainly no good if I want my BG to rise rapidly eg No use as hypo recovery carbs.

Control solution is a good call for testing the BG meter. If you have a couple of strips to spare you can also squeeze a bigger than usual droplet and then check twice from the same sample to see how much variation you get between strips.

There is bound to be some difference (there is with all meters) but readings should be within 10-15% of each other ideally.

Oops, I never even thought about the fat in chocolate could be slowing things down
