However I don’t do Facebook, twitter, ...
I just want to be able to post photos from my iPad onto the forum.
Bother

I've not noticed an option to change image size when emailing them. I don't use email programmes on PC.
On various Android devices, I've used the default Android email app, default Samsung app, Gmail app, and the Yahoo app.

[Note: getting a phone or tablet on contact with data can be cheaper than getting just the data. Hence having Android]

Hi SB2015. Trying to be non techy.... The underlying problem, as usual, comes down to money. Every picture up put on the forum has to be stored wherever the forum owners buy space to store them. As cameras on phones and laptops have got better, the size of the picture files get bigger and bigger and bigger, the space needed to store the pictures has got bigger and bigger and bigger and more space costs more money. It's primarily for that reason that forum operators like to limit the size of the picture files.

I don't use Apple products - not for any particular reason, just don't. I have done a bit of googling and found that there are specific apps for I-pads which reduce the file size of picture files so that they can be shared around much more easily. Its a common problem and people have been writing apps to deal with it. I am sure you can find one on the I-store. Find an app and load it up. Open the picture using the app, choose the size you want it reduced to ( less than 2 MB ) and resave it. Use the resaved version to post to the forum. Once you have done it a couple of times it will become second nature.

Even with ED&D's renowned talents for diplomacy and persuasion, I'm guessing he will find it impossible to get the forum architect to accept bigger picture files unless DUK are happy to underwrite the inevitable increased costs, so it is down to us to find solutions.

If you need some help, find a 10 year old with an I-pad - if they are anything like my grandchildren, they will sort you!!

By the way, people like Facebook and twitter are perfectly happy to bear the cost of the bigger files because they make so much money selling on the information they glean from them they can afford it. DUK, who are to be congratulated for supporting this forum, don't, as far as I am aware, look on it as a way of making money.

I’ve got it sussed. I use an iPhone or iPad, click on attach file, select your photo, if you try to attach it it will say it’s too large. Go back to photo and you’ll see in small writing at the bottom the option to change the size, I select medium and it’s fine. Obviously this is Apple, I don’t know what you‘re using.

I’ve just tried to attach a photo so I can send a screen shot to show you and I didn’t have to change the size! Has it been sorted?

I get this when I attach a full size camera image on iPad @SB2015 (using the default Apple Mail)

It didn’t appear when attaching small images, but gave me the option when the image was larger...

Im sure this is the root of the issue, though actually the forum software does resize larger images (and one would hope only keeps the full sized one temporarily for processing). The particular snag here seems to be that the maximum uploadable file size *before* the forum software does its resizing is stopping several members from sharing images. Servers often place limits on upload sizes for the reasons you suggest, and also because the upload scripts may ‘timeout’ during the time it takes to upload a larger file.

However I can understand member’s frustration that this has only changed since the software was updated, and they used to be able to upload without problems.

Got it ED&D, so something might be doable at your end. Take your biggest smile and some choccy biscuits (for him, not you) when you go to see the architect.

I dont do Apple products, what we are saying is this problem with not being able to post pictures is only since the forum change.

Get that grovesy. It occurred to me that if you had to go down the route of reducing picture file size before uploading then a dedicated app might be a way forward. I found that they are available for the I-pad as used by SB and no doubt exist for android although I did not look. Anyway, it looks like my assumption that it was only fixable at the user might be wrong. Hope so, and things can go back to where they were before the update.

Grr. Tried again. Tried taking the photo on my phone, then email to me. But in my phone my email system is unmanageable.

Is there a way of accessing the forum on an android phone? Do you think a ohoto taken on the phone will be smaller. @Docb , what app do I look for. I did try looking but had no idea what to ask for, and when I put in a description in the search engine nothing came back. Sadly we don’t have any young children to ask.

I am determined to sort this.

I can access the forum using internet and the browser I normal would on Android phone. I only do that on the odd occasion when there has been a strange access problem , that has not happened for a while, or whilst trying to upload the photos.I don't like that as it is even more fiddly and last time I tried it I could not do it.

Hi SB2015. I dont't have access for to the Apple Appstore but I have just put "resize photo" into the play store search and a whole load of apps turned up. I would expect the same to happen in the app store.

You also have eggyg's solution above. As I understand it, she does not try and copy and paste or drag an image into the forum, she uses the "attach files" button on the bottom of the box where you type your messages. This opens up a box where she can browse and find the picture she wants. Tap on it and the forum will try to add it to your message. If the file is too big it will offer you the chance to make it smaller as eggyg describes.

Anyway, hopefully, your (and other peoples) problems will be solved when ed&d smoothtalks the architect.

I have always added photos by attaching files. I didn’t know there was another way.
I tried emailing it to me from my phone to the iPad but couldn’t get that to work either.

Is there an App for the forum now that can be out on a phone? If so how?
Then perhaps I can try adding pictures from my phone.
(You May not have realised just how much of a tech numpty I am. True colours shining through!)

Yes. Just use your browser like you do on a desktop. I've got Firefox. It's better on a tablet than a phone though. A Bluetooth keyboard can help.
Do you think a ohoto taken on the phone will be smaller.
Possibly. What are you actually using at the moment. What size files have you been trying to upload?
Try taking some on your phone.
Thought: does the camera you've been using allow you to shoot at a lower resolution? That can give smaller file sizes. If it's a proper camera it may have a setting for how much it compresses pictures.
Android phones used to have a whole set of resolutions to choose from.

I am using the email system on my iPad. Is that what you mean by Apple mail?
I have tried
- emailing from my phone. Image too big
- logging onto forum in my phone and attaching an image from there. Image too big.
- looking at the settings for the camera in my phone. No option to reduce size that I can see.
I have run out of ideas.
What have I not understood
Do you mind going through anything else I have missed

I would so like the old forum back at present.
I know that this sparkly and bright, but ...

I use Safari on the iPad and I can just click on it to get back to the forum
On my phone I go through a google search to find the forum and then get to it.
Is there a shorter way?

I have no idea why in my iPad I don’t get the three dots at the bottom of the photo to give me the option of resizing. Just a photo, and when I try more options on the tool bar still no resizing options.

Mike I really have tried all the suggestions offered so far, and I have just gone back through all the suggestions above to check I haven’t missed any.

@Josh DUK , why did they choose to introduce this issue and is there anyway of lifting this limit on size so that it is possible to upload pictures as before, PLEASE.

... But I had tried to email it from my phone.
This time I emailed it to myself from my iPad.

Okay so it is possible, but a long way round
Is there anyway to avoid this long process.
Please can we try to increase the size possible

Slightly happier now I know that it is possible, so long as I save it to Dropbox (that was the only way I got it to work) and have some time to spare to do this. A little victory.
