My son has (as far as I know) taken his first Humilin injection this morning. He did ask my advice as its cloudy (not used to that) and despite rotating and turning it as instructed last night, it seemed to have separated out again this morning, so we did it all again until it was a uniform colour. He didn't get up until 11.30 so it's going to still be in his system at dinner time, so whether he fits any novorapid in today too or not I don't know.

Interestingly, he has definitely had at least one injection of novorapid the past couple of days, so maybe he really is trying at last. He did have a brief conversation with his sister the other day about this time next year there will be 3 cars on our front drive, implying he intends to learn to drive, and she did slip in a comment about him needing a full year of good control before being granted a licence, maybe that has made the difference?

I don't mind what it is, just chuffed he seems to be injecting a bit again. Daren't yet ask about the testing side of things, but will in a day or two. Fingers crossed we are getting somewhere at last, or at least averting a disaster over Christmas.

Hope so Tina! 🙂 Hope the late injection doesn't cause any problems that might put him off 🙂

Any cloudy insulin needs mixing / rolling before each dose. But great news that he's decided to inject himself - getting the timings closer to ideal can come gradually.

Yup - it only stays 'suspended' for a few minutes, it is supposed to spearate and sink again in between times and even if say it's been in a pocket or bag being jiggled about some and looks fairly mixed, you should still roll it again immediately before jabbing.

Otherwise you get far too much soluble and hardly any long-lasting.

I certainly don't miss having to do that!

That and having to mix a cloudy with a clear and having to do them in the right order so you don't get cloudy in with the clear ! 🙄

They don't know they're born these days :D

Really pleased that he seems to be making an effort. Seems like his sister is the key to his future success. That and a good shouting from his team every time he doesn't do it, and big praise every time he does.

Oh my goodness memories of mixing actrapid and monotard in the same stringer (I think that was what they were called). Tina I hope your son comes to terms with this soon. I think a lot of us have gone through rebellious phases as teenagers with diabetes and then gone on to have fantastic lives. I'm sure it will be the same for your son

So glad that things seem to be going in the right direction - will keep fingers and toes crossed. Wishing you and your family a Very Merry Christmas. Amanda 🙂

Great News Tina, I have been wondering how things were going. Sounds like the driving might have played a part, like you say. Might get his sister to drop a hint about the need to test before driving, and therefore a good idea to get in the habit now?
Hope you manage to all have a good Christmas after the recent stresses and strains. Best wishes

Thank you everyone for your lovely replies and good wishes. He is definitely a far nicer boy these past couple of days, probably another reflection that he isn't as high has he has been of late - long may it continue.

Quick question about the Humilin, it's pre-mixed in the capsule - do we need to take it out of the pen to roll/mix it each time, or just do it in the pen? I didn't realise we had to do anything until he loaded the pen last night, then came to me this morning and said it had separated out again. I got the impression from the leaflet (though ought to read it again if he will let me) that we only had to do that the first time it was used - didn't realise it's an ongoing thing with it.

I also want to take this opportunity to say a massive THANK YOU to all you lovely people. I really have found wonderful support from you all in our first year. I know we have our team and the DSN but I am not good at making phone calls and asking for help but you lot have been so reliable and helpful and just wonderful to 'listen' to me letting off steam from time to time.

I do hope all of you have a fantastic Christmas and want to wish you all a very happy and healthy New Year.

Love Tina xxx

That's a relief to hear.

You can just roll the pen, you don't have to take it out. it will mix just as well and you can see though the "window" if it's mixed enough. Make sure you don't shake it though, otherwise you get bubbles.

Merry Christmas to you too and may the "being good" continue for ever😉

What Monica says :D

If he injects it unmixed, it will act too quickly and he'll soon know about it. So it's important to roll it each time to mix it up in pen. It'll become a habit like everything else.🙂
