Thought we were tickinh along ok and managing the highs and lows of life with a diabetes child. Just got back from Consultant appointment and her HB1AC has gone up to 8.1 (was 7.6 last time).

Feel that I must have done something wrong this time.

We are adjusting her insulin up and tweaking her carbs. I know its stupid but every time we have to increase her dose it makes me feel worse.

Also she is becoming more and more anxious regarding her levels, which I mentioned at the appointment today (but not in front of her), so the consultant is referring so that she can have someone to talk to about this. I think this anxiety is due to the move to the Junior school in September and she is worried that all the new teachers etc won't know what to do.

Just a bad day :(

Oh bless you both. Don't beat yourself up about it. Your daughter is still so young, things will change all the time. She is growing, and activity levels are all over the place at that age, things can be pretty unpredictable.

I remember feeling elated the first few consultations with my son after diagnosis with his HbA1c coming down each time, once really much lower than we dared even imagine, then we had one higher, and I too remember feeling really deflated. Couldn't understand what I had done wrong. I felt so guilty.

Really, honestly, don't beat yourself up over it. And doses do get adjusted all the time. I was shocked recently to find a friend of mine whose son is younger and significantly smaller than my son actually has larger doses of insulin that him, so age/size seems to have no bearings on it whatsoever.

I'm glad your daughter is being offered some help to cope with her anxieties, again my son needed some help that way after a couple of months, and I'm so glad he did, it really did help him.

Hang on in there, tomorrow is another day. Pick yourself up, dust yourself down, and things will seem brighter in the morning. I hope you have a good friend you can talk to too to unburden yourself. Keep posting on here, people will be really supportive and see you through the bad times.

Take care.
Tina

oh bless you, i guess the anxiety is normal with a change of school, i still get bit anxious around being in a new place of work and doing all my diabetic stuff, sounds like you are doing a grand job, big hugs x

Hang in there, 8.1 may be a little high but it's good for a child that is still growing. My daughter's last test was 9.0 I can't do more or better than what I've done but we got to keep going and keep it under control as best as we can ((hug)) x

I'm sorry to hear you're feeling low. I wish I could offer some useful advice but we haven't had our first HbA1c. So I will just say that you are doing a brilliant job. It's not easy and there are bound to be low days. It's just so hard when you can see it effecting your child. Keep going, there will be good days around the corner xxx
