Mallory Lorge, who suffers from Type 1 diabetes, is forced to ration her insulin and look at her possessions to decide what she can sell to pay down her bills because she isn’t receiving a paycheck during the record-long government shutdown.

Lorge, who lives in the small town of River Falls, Wisconsin, said she has two vials of insulin left in her fridge, but she is rationing them because she can no longer afford the $300 copay.

Her blood sugar rose to a high level last week, but she said she felt forced to ignore it. Instead, she went to bed.

“When it gets that high you can go into diabetic ketoacidosis, you can go into a coma,” she said. “I can’t afford to go to the ER. I can’t afford anything. I just went to bed and hoped I’d wake up.”

:( Thank goodness for the NHS!

There are about a million federal employees. This poor lady may be only one of those who are diabetic who will have to choose, in winter, to balance food, insulin and heating. It’s no comfort that back pay will be coming.

Well we are pawns indeed Benny - but so far our 'government' has been reliable in causing such crass stupidities cos there's always been enough Nay* Sayers to prevent them from killing voters in the process. I live in hope that there still are enough.

* ironically I did truthfully purely accidentally type the letter next to the N at first !

The British humanitarian bubble burst the day they introduced Universal Credit, and put a cap on benefit raises in line with inflation. To say nothing about changing from DLA to PIP. And the way that British people who came over on the Windrush have been treated.

You think we live in a humanitarian society now? I don’t. The British people are intrinsically humane, hence food banks. It’s just the government that isn’t.
