Hi everyone
So I’m 3 weeks post diagnosis. My eyesight is shocking. Really blurry and I’m struggling. I have glasses for laptop work but not needed pre diagnosis for anything else. Literally now without glasses I can barely see. The world is a blur. Consultant in hospital said it’s the build up of glucose which will slowly dissolve and not to rush out and get New glasses etc. I have had to get 3.5 strength readers in the meantime as my own glasses are ok-ish but not strong enough. It’s really horrible and making me anxious on my feet and getting the tube to work etc is hell. I went back to work yesterday and by the time the day ended my eyes were painful and ended up with a vile headache.
Anyone else had this ?? It’s worrying the heck out of me. I don’t like it at all.
Thanks 🙂

Short answer yes, a lot of us probably. Things should improve as your blood sugars stabilise. It is worrying, but perfectly normal.

Yes, I had this as well Claudia - it's very common, so don't worry! Very frustrating! 😱 It took a few weeks for mine to get back to normal so I survived on poundshop reading glasses. The excess glucose distorts the lens of the eye, apparently. Just take care, and I hope it settles down for you soon 🙂

Thanks so so so much ! I’m doing the same and look like a real goober in my Sainsbury’s cheapie readers. Lol. Ohhhhhh how fabulous eh. I’m so glad to know I am not the only one. 🙂

Being I was a clerk - pre computers for almost everything LOL - I was signed off work for over a month until my eyesight got back to normal.

Once you think it has - and frankly using your eyes enough to get a headache doesn't sound very advisable to me - despite how common it is at first! - and I really think you ought to ask your consultant whether it's a good idea?

I have been off for 2 weeks and went back to work yesterday. I thought I would be ok but really struggled. I may give my hospital diabetic nurse a call and see what she thinks. I’m genuinely struggling to read and have to be so careful walking etc. Not great. I just want to be able to see properly again soon so I really hope it doesn’t take long. I’m doing 3 days per week for the next 3 weeks so hopefully that will allow me some eye ease. I’m having Tuesdays and wednesdays off - having to use my annual leave tho but I mustn’t complain life is too short eh !
Computer screens are killers on eyes I think.
:(

The trouble is you have to work that much harder to try and focus :( Are you able to increase the zoom level on your screen? Is it a large company with a department that oversees health and safety at work? I once worked at a company where they would jump into action if your chair was a bit uncomfy! 😱 🙂

Wow I can’t inagine having that much support ! The irony is I work for a private healthcare company that works alongside the NHS.
I walked into work yesterday to be told I had a massive report needing completion to be sent to a CCG by 4pm. I had 1200 odd emails and my boss didn’t tell me until nearly noon so I really had to push myself. He did have the decency to ask me how I was.....
*sigh*

You must tell him about the problems you are having. It's unreasonable to expect someone who has so recently been diagnosed with a life-changing and very serious condition like Type 1 to return and manage as though they had just recovered from a minor sniffle 😱 :( You have the right to expect your company to make 'reasonable adjustments' as a Type 1 - if you are unsure about this I'd suggest contacting the Diabetes UK Helpline and discussing your situation with them - it's free and confidential:

Great advice that I shalll follow. Thank you.

Hi CK. Sorry to here about this, well done for getting back to work. Hydration is so important especially for healthy eyes. Its only weeks since diagnosis & hopefully it will improve, good luck 🙂
